If your school-fee payment failed, or your bank shows a debit but the school portal has no receipt, don’t pay again immediately. First save the portal and bank/app records, check the transaction status with your payment provider, and ask the school’s official fee office to reconcile the payment. A debit is not proof that the school’s fee ledger has been updated.
The timelines and escalation routes below apply to India’s UPI and banking context. Your school portal and payment method may show different status labels, so verify the transaction in both places.
What to do first when the portal has no receipt
- Save the evidence. Capture the fee portal’s status and the debit or transaction entry in your bank or payment app. Note the transaction ID or reference number, date, amount, payment method, and student or fee-account identifier.
- Check the status in the payment app or bank. Look for whether the transaction is marked failed, pending, or successful. A debit alone does not confirm that the school received confirmation or posted the fee to its ledger.
- Contact the school through an official channel. If the transaction is pending or successful but no receipt appears, send the transaction reference to the school’s official fee office or portal support. Ask them to check with their payment gateway or acquirer and reconcile the fee before you try paying again.
- Keep your communications and reference numbers. If you contact the bank, payment app, school, or a complaint service, record the date, support reference, and any response.
Never give an OTP, UPI PIN, or full card credentials to someone claiming they can recover the payment through an unofficial channel.
How to read the transaction status
| Payment status | What it may mean | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Failed | The payment did not complete, although the payer’s account may still show a debit while the reversal is pending. | Use the transaction reference to contact your bank or payment app. For a failed UPI debit, NPCI says the amount should be refunded; if it has not returned within one hour, contact bank customer support. NPCI UPI FAQ. |
| Pending | The transaction may still be processing. In the specific case NPCI describes as a delay at the beneficiary bank, the payment may reach the beneficiary within 48 hours. | Check with your provider and the school rather than assuming the payment has failed. Do not submit a second payment until the school has checked whether the first was received. NPCI UPI FAQ. |
| Successful, but no school receipt | The payer-side transaction may be successful even though the school’s confirmation or fee-ledger update has not appeared. | Give the school’s official fee office or portal support the reference and ask it to verify receipt with its payment gateway or acquirer and reconcile the fee. The exact portal update time is not established nationally. |
These are different records: the payer’s debit, the payment provider’s transaction status, the merchant’s confirmation, and the school’s fee ledger or receipt. A mismatch needs reconciliation; it does not by itself tell you which record is delayed.

What refund timeline applies to a failed UPI fee payment?
For a defined case—a domestic UPI merchant payment where the payer’s account is debited but the merchant has not received transaction confirmation—the Reserve Bank of India’s September 20, 2019 framework sets auto-reversal within T+5 days. T is the calendar date of the transaction. If reversal is delayed beyond T+5, the framework provides compensation of ₹100 per day of delay. RBI describes the prescribed turnaround time as “the outer limit for resolution of failed transactions” and says applicable compensation should be credited automatically, without waiting for a complaint or claim. See the RBI framework on harmonisation of turnaround time for failed transactions.
That rule is for the specified UPI merchant-payment failure; it does not establish that every missing school receipt is that exact failure. The payment may instead be pending, successful but unreconciled, or a different type of transaction. NPCI’s advice to contact the bank if a failed UPI debit has not been refunded within one hour is a prompt-support instruction; it is not the RBI T+5 limit or the rule for calculating compensation. Do not apply the 7–10 working days guidance found on India’s National Government Services Portal (NTRP) to a school payment: that guidance concerns failed transactions on that particular government portal, not school-fee payments. NTRP guidance.
How to escalate if the payment is not resolved
1. Raise a formal complaint with your bank or payment provider
If the provider’s status or refund does not resolve the issue, make a formal complaint using its official support channel. Include the transaction reference, amount, date, payment method, and evidence of the portal status. Keep the complaint number and response.

NPCI provides a complaint and status facility for applicable transactions. It forwards a complaint to the relevant member bank or institution; that institution is responsible for resolving it. Use the NPCI dispute redressal mechanism and retain the complaint reference.
3. Consider the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme
If the bank or regulated provider’s response remains unsatisfactory, check the current filing eligibility and instructions for the RBI Integrated Ombudsman Scheme. RBI says customers who do not receive redress under the failed-transaction turnaround framework can register a complaint under the scheme.

If the debit was unauthorized
A payment you deliberately initiated that failed or has no receipt is different from a debit you did not authorize. If you see unauthorized activity, report it to your bank immediately and follow the separate RBI framework for limiting customer liability in unauthorized electronic banking transactions. Do not treat an unauthorized debit as an ordinary merchant-payment failure.
