Before installing a major One UI update, back up important data, charge your Galaxy phone, connect to stable Wi-Fi, and check for the update in Settings. Once installation starts, leave the phone alone until it finishes. Menu labels and availability can vary by model, software version, carrier, and region.
1. Back up the data you cannot afford to lose
A major update is not a substitute for a backup. Use Samsung Smart Switch to back up selected phone content to a computer or compatible external storage before you begin. Samsung explains its backup options at How to use Smart Switch to transfer and back up data.
Smart Switch does not necessarily copy everything: transfer coverage depends on the device and operating system, and some third-party messenger data or DRM-protected content may not transfer. Check the backup method for any app-specific data you rely on, and make a separate backup if the app provides one.
Choose a backup destination

An external drive is optional; you do not need to buy one to install One UI. Samsung describes supported transfer and backup options, including compatibility limits, in its Smart Switch guide.

2. Charge the phone and prepare a stable connection
Start with sufficient battery and use a stable connection. Samsung Bangladesh’s update guidance specifies at least 20% battery, while Samsung’s other regional guidance says to make sure the device is sufficiently charged without giving that same threshold. Treat 20% as regional guidance, not a universal rule; follow any requirement or warning shown on your phone. See Samsung’s Galaxy software update instructions and UK update guidance.
Use Wi-Fi where possible for a large download. Samsung notes that some carrier conditions may require Wi-Fi for major updates such as One UI 7. If your phone displays a connection requirement, follow that prompt.

3. Check for the update in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. On some devices, the option may be called System updates.
- Tap Download and install, if shown, and follow the instructions on screen.
Samsung documents this route in its update instructions. An update may not appear for every phone at the same time: release waves, carrier requirements, model, and software version can affect availability. Samsung’s UK update guidance covers those availability considerations.
4. Check storage only if the phone asks
Samsung does not specify one free-space target that applies to every Galaxy model and update. If the update reports insufficient storage, remove or move content until the phone’s displayed requirement is met, then try again. Do not rely on a generic online storage figure; the device’s prompt is the relevant amount. Samsung’s software update troubleshooting guidance covers storage-related update problems.

5. Let the installation finish without interruption
Once installation begins, keep the phone connected as instructed and do not use it or disconnect a USB cable during the update. Samsung warns that the phone may restart several times. Its US instructions put it plainly: “Don’t disconnect the USB cable or use your device until the update is complete.” See Samsung’s update instructions.
After updating, Samsung Bangladesh notes that its guidance does not allow a downgrade to previous firmware because of enhanced security policies. Treat a major update as a forward change, not an installation you can assume you can undo; see Samsung Bangladesh’s update guidance.

6. If the update is unavailable or fails
The update does not appear
Check again through Settings > Software update (or System updates, if that is what your device shows). A staged rollout, carrier requirements, model, or current software version may explain why it is not available yet. Do not treat its absence as proof that the phone is malfunctioning.
The download repeatedly fails
Samsung lists Smart Switch on a PC as an alternative route when an over-the-air update repeatedly fails. Follow the prompts in Smart Switch and use Samsung’s troubleshooting steps at Galaxy software update troubleshooting.

The phone freezes or will not boot normally
For a frozen or lagging phone, Samsung documents a force-reboot procedure in its One UI 7 troubleshooting guide. That procedure specifies at least 5% battery for the force reboot; this is a requirement for that recovery step, not the general battery recommendation before installing an update. If the phone will not boot normally, Samsung directs users to service support. Back up important data before considering a factory data reset, which can erase it.
