On most Galaxy phones, open Settings > Software update, then tap Download and install or the update-check option shown on your device. If Samsung offers an update, download it and follow the prompts. To see which One UI version is already installed, go to Settings > About phone > Software information.
Check for and install an update in Settings
- Open Settings.
- Tap Software update. Some devices may label this area System updates.
- Tap Download and install, or choose the check option displayed. Depending on the device, software version, and carrier, it may say Check for updates, Check for system updates, or Check for software updates.
- If an update is offered, tap the download or install control shown, such as Download now or Install now, and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Let the phone finish the update and restart if prompted. Do not interrupt an installation in progress.
Samsung’s instructions distinguish the menu action by software version: on devices with One UI 8.0 or earlier, the route is Software update > Download and install; on devices with One UI 8.5 or later, it is Software update > Check for updates. The exact wording can still vary by model and carrier. Samsung’s update instructions describe these menu differences.
Check which One UI version is installed
Open Settings > About phone > Software information. The screen lists the One UI version, Android version, and build number. Some phones also provide Last update, System Update history, or a similar history option in the Software update area, where you can review the most recently installed release and its notes.
Why an update may not appear
Not seeing an update does not, by itself, mean something is wrong. Samsung says availability depends on the phone and rollout context; its Canada One UI 8 guide states, “Unless you’re in an exceptional case, it’s completely normal not to see any available updates.” A release listed for another model, carrier, or country does not confirm that it is available for your phone.

- Check your connection. An internet connection is required to download an update. Try Wi-Fi if mobile data does not work; some carriers require Wi-Fi.
- Charge the phone. Samsung recommends charging to at least 50% before installation.
- Free up storage if needed. Insufficient space can prevent an update. Samsung suggests using Device care to clear space or backing up files with Smart Switch or a Samsung or Google account.
- Allow for carrier timing. Samsung notes that carrier-locked models may receive updates later than unlocked devices. Timing varies by exact model, market, and carrier; a rollout in one region does not establish a guaranteed date elsewhere.
Samsung’s One UI 8 guide for Canada, updated July 16, 2026, described an ongoing rollout to additional Canadian-market models and notes that settings and features can vary by device, carrier, and network connection. Use the update check on your own phone rather than treating that regional guide as a universal eligibility list.
Use Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC
If the phone’s update screen does not help, Samsung documents Smart Switch as a computer-based way to check for an update. This route runs through a Mac or Windows PC and connects the phone by USB; it is a fallback, not a guarantee that an update will be available sooner.

- Install and open Smart Switch on a Mac or Windows PC.
- Connect the Galaxy phone with its USB cable. Samsung specifies the cable included with the device; some computers may need a USB adapter.
- Allow Smart Switch to detect the phone.
- If an Update option appears, select it and follow the prompts.
- Keep the cable connected and do not use the phone until the update finishes.
Samsung’s Smart Switch update instructions explain this computer method. You do not need to buy another cable for a normal over-the-air update; for Smart Switch, a suitable cable you already have is sufficient.
