Keep an automated lab experiment safe by assessing hazards before operation, choosing safeguards that match the specific robot and experiment, and planning how the system will respond to faults—especially when no one is present. Protect equipment as well as people: identify critical utilities, define safe shutdown and restart conditions, and include setup, programming, testing, and maintenance in the safety plan.

Start with a risk assessment of the whole experiment

Assess the application before automating a protocol or changing its setup. Include the robot or other automated equipment, experimental materials, instruments, utilities, people who may enter the area, and every operating state—not just the normal cycle. OSHA’s Technical Manual on industrial robot safety advises considering design, use, programming, operation, and maintenance in the risk assessment.

Map plausible failures and their consequences for both people and equipment. Consider startup, normal operation, sensor or control faults, loss of a required utility, restart after interruption, and manual intervention. Check equipment documentation for hazards associated with loss of coolant or other required services rather than assuming every instrument has the same needs.

Use these questions as a planning prompt, not as a substitute for your institution’s assessment process:

  • What should happen if something goes wrong, and who must respond?

Choose safeguards for the application

Safeguards should address hazards identified in the assessment. OSHA identifies fixed guards, interlocked guards, and presence-sensing devices as possible measures; the appropriate arrangement depends on the application and the people’s access to it. A product or component by itself does not establish that an automated system is safe.

Interlocked barriers and access controls

OSHA’s robotics instruction describes an interlocked access gate that stops automatic operation when opened. In that example, restarting requires closing the gate and reactivating a control switch outside the barrier. See OSHA’s Industrial Robot Systems and Industrial Robot System Safety instruction for the described safeguard. Design the actual access and reset arrangements around the assessed hazard and the system.

DEWALT DPG82-11 Concealer Clear Anti-Fog Dual Mold Safety Goggle, Clear Lens, 1 Pair
  • DEWALT ToughCoat hard coated lens provides tough protection against scratches.
  • DEWALT anti-fog lens coating provides tough protection against fogging.
  • Soft, dual injected rubber conforms to the face to provide a high level protection from dust and debris.
  • Adjustable, elastic cloth head strap provides a comfortable fit.
  • Ventilation channels allow breathability and added protection against fogging.

Check safeguards through normal and abnormal conditions

For each safeguard, determine how it behaves during normal operation, foreseeable access, a fault, reset, and maintenance. Make sure staff know how it works and how to report a defect. OSHA’s robotics instruction recommends periodic checks of safety-critical equipment and connections. Signs or awareness lights may provide information, but they do not replace an engineered safeguard when the risk assessment calls for one.

Plan for unattended runs and equipment faults

An unattended experiment needs a defined response to failures that could injure someone or damage equipment. The National Research Council’s Prudent Practices in the Laboratory says: “Interlocks are also available that shut off electrical power in the event of loss of coolant flow and are recommended for unattended operations.” The recommendation is specific to loss of coolant flow; it is not a universal prescription for every laboratory device. NoCry Anti-Fog Safety Goggles Over Glasses, Dust Eye Protection, ANSI Z87.1
  • SMOOTH FIT OVER YOUR PRESCRIPTION EYEGLASSES — Want to wear your safety goggles over eyeglasses? These safety goggles fit most prescription eyewear, so you don't have to compromise on your sight. The soft TPR frame gasket with built-in slots creates a secure seal without squeezing your eye goggles or frames.
  • CLEAR FIELD OF VIEW — Treated with our premium UltraShield coating, these goggles are 5x more fog-resistant and 2x more scratch-tough than regular safety eyewear. Also, the panoramic lens offers the widest view of any clear goggles in its class, complete with UV380 for full eye protection, so you don't have to worry about turning your head.
  • SO COMFORTABLE YOU CAN WEAR THEM ALL DAY — In addition to being adjustable, the wide, soft headband and pivoting buckles spread pressure evenly, providing a stable, comfortable feel. These safety goggles for men and women are easy to wear with hats, helmets, or ear protection, staying put even as you move through different tasks in the shop.
  • VENTED FOR SPLASH PROTECTION AND AIRFLOW — Indirect D3 and D4 vents help keep these anti fog goggles clear while sealing out splashes and fine particles; ideal as lab goggles, dust goggles, science goggles, or chemical splash goggles. During long sessions, the vents help maintain steady clarity without that stuffy, sealed-up feeling.
  • READY FOR ANYTHING — ANSI Z87.1 rated protective goggles adult built for job sites, labs, yard work, or workshops. The lens is built to withstand debris and unexpected contact while maintaining clear visibility in active shop conditions. Use them as dust goggles, work goggles, over glasses goggles, or mowing goggles.

Use the instrument’s documentation and qualified site personnel to determine which utilities or conditions matter for a particular device—such as coolant, ventilation, pressure, vacuum, or temperature—and what response is appropriate. For each relevant failure, decide:

  • What condition should stop or interrupt the run, and how will it be detected?
  • What should be de-energized, and what may need to remain powered for a safe shutdown or alarm?
  • How will the responsible person be alerted?
  • What inspection, correction, and controlled reset are required before restart?

These are practical planning questions derived from risk-assessment and contingency guidance, not a standardized checklist for all laboratories. Do not assume a generic interlock or alarm addresses a device’s specific failure modes.

Control programming, setup, testing, and maintenance

Treat non-routine work as a distinct risk state. OSHA notes that many robot accidents occur during programming, maintenance, testing, setup, or adjustment, when a worker may be inside the robot’s working envelope. Plan safe access, authorized personnel, training, and controls that prevent an unexpected restart while someone is exposed.

For applicable maintenance and repair, use the site’s hazardous-energy isolation procedures. OSHA’s older robotics instruction specifically recommends lockout procedures for preventive maintenance or repair; follow the current requirements and procedures that apply to your workplace rather than treating an older instruction as a complete compliance determination.

Integrate automation into laboratory safety practice

Automation does not remove the need to address chemical and physical hazards. OSHA’s Appendix A to the Laboratory Standard reproduces National Research Council recommendations to identify hazards before work, select engineering, administrative, and personal protective equipment controls, prepare for contingencies, train personnel, and inspect safety equipment. It also identifies moving equipment as a potential physical hazard.

For covered chemical laboratories, OSHA describes a written, facility-specific Chemical Hygiene Plan addressing procedures, equipment, personal protective equipment, and work practices; the cited appendix says the plan should be reviewed as needed and at least annually. Confirm applicability and local requirements with your institution’s EHS office. OSHA notes that state-plan jurisdictions may have requirements that differ from or are more stringent than federal rules. Its robotics overview says there are no specific OSHA standards for the robotics industry, but that does not mean robot applications are unregulated: applicable workplace standards and other jurisdictional requirements still matter. Check current standards and local requirements before commissioning or modifying an installation.

Compare safeguard options before choosing one

When evaluating more than one safeguard or system design, compare how each option addresses the assessed application rather than choosing by product category alone.

Comparison point Question to answer
Hazard coverage Which specific hazard or failure mode does it address?
Operating states Does it cover normal operation, non-routine work, and unattended runs where relevant?
Fault and restart behavior What does the system do on a fault, and how is a safe restart controlled?
Compatibility Is it suitable for the robot, instrument, experiment, and laboratory environment?
Implementation Who is responsible for installation and validation?
Ongoing care What inspection and maintenance are needed to keep it effective?

These comparison questions follow OSHA’s risk-assessment factors and laboratory contingency guidance; they are not a product test or a quoted standard.
