Connect your controller, confirm Windows recognizes it, then map it in your emulator’s input settings. For Project64, start with its input plugin and try N-Rage if detection or mapping fails. In BizHawk, assign stick movement on the Analog tab; the Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide also warns that four digital “P1 A” bindings can interfere with aiming. Finish by checking movement, aiming, and every mapped button in the game.

Choose an emulator and connect the controller

Project64 is a Windows-focused option; its documentation lists Windows 10 and 11 requirements. Its menus and available input plugins can vary by installed version. BizHawk is another option covered by the Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide, but that guide’s specific setup advice applies to its Archipelago context, not automatically to every standard playthrough.

Connect a USB N64-style controller directly, or connect an original wired N64 controller through a compatible N64-to-USB adapter. The PC must detect the device before the emulator can map it. Adapter and controller compatibility varies, so check the documentation for your specific hardware. A modern gamepad or keyboard can also be used if the emulator detects and maps it, though a keyboard does not provide the same analog stick input.

Map the controller in Project64

  1. Confirm Windows sees the controller. Connect it and check that it appears as an input device before opening the emulator. If it does not, troubleshoot the connection, adapter, or device mode first.
  2. Open Project64’s controller or input configuration. The exact menu labels depend on the installed version and plugin. Select the detected controller device if the configuration offers a device selector.
  3. Map the N64 controls. Assign the physical buttons to their corresponding N64 controls. Bind the stick to analog axes, not just digital directions, where the plugin allows it.
  4. Begin with Project64’s input plugin. Project64 support describes the choice as “Project64 input, or N-Rage input plugin (depending on your controller/needs).” If the controller is missing or its mappings do not work, switch to N-Rage and configure the device and bindings there.

The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide also advises Project64 users to enable N-Rage when controller setup causes trouble. That is troubleshooting advice for that guide’s setup, not a universal requirement for every Project64 installation.

Set up the controller in BizHawk

In BizHawk, configure directional stick input through the Analog tab. The Banjo-Tooie Archipelago guide specifically says to disable these bindings if they are assigned: “P1 A Up,” “P1 A Down,” “P1 A Left,” and “P1 A Right.” Those digital direction bindings can conflict with aiming; leave movement on the analog stick instead.

Test movement, aiming, and buttons in-game

  • Move in several directions and check that the character responds smoothly.
  • Turn and aim with the analog stick. If a direction is reversed or aiming is erratic, revisit the axis assignments.
  • Press each mapped button and confirm it triggers the intended action.
  • Adjust the emulator’s dead-zone or sensitivity settings if the stick drifts, feels unresponsive near the center, or is difficult to control.
  • Check any C-button actions you have mapped, especially if the physical controller layout differs from an original N64 controller.

Troubleshoot common input problems

The emulator does not detect the controller

First establish that the operating system detects the device. Then select the correct controller and input plugin in the emulator. In Project64, try N-Rage if Project64’s own input plugin does not work with the controller. For an adapter, confirm its instructions cover your hardware and emulator rather than assuming support transfers between programs.

  • The N64 Controller Adapter allows you to connect up to two N64 Controllers to your Switch/Switch 2 System or PC Windows.

  • Supports PC Xinput and Dinput.
  • Supports Turbo, Auto Fire, Hold functions. The Left Stick and D-Pad can be switched. The button A and B can be switched.

Buttons work, but movement or aiming does not

Rebind the stick’s analog axes and verify that horizontal and vertical movement are assigned to the correct axes. If using BizHawk, remove the four digital “P1 A” direction bindings described above and use the Analog tab for directional input.

An adapter works in one emulator but not another

Adapter support depends on the adapter, emulator, and input plugin. Raphnet describes direct-access plugins for Project64 and Mupen64Plus; consult its adapter documentation for the exact adapter and software version. Support in one emulator does not establish support in another.

Input problems persist

Project64 support recommends updating Windows and device drivers, using a current stable or nightly build, checking the game dump, and trying another input plugin. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which change fixes the problem.

When an adapter is needed

If you already own an original wired N64 controller, an N64-to-USB adapter is an optional way to connect it to a PC; it is not required if you have a USB controller the PC already detects. Raphnet’s documentation describes plugins that provide direct controller access in Project64 and Mupen64Plus, but verify compatibility for your particular adapter. A USB N64-style controller or a mappable modern gamepad may be simpler alternatives.
