In Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the dedicated Free Mission mode is reported to unlock after you clear the campaign once, letting you replay individual missions. To meet a sortie’s objectives, check its briefing and on-screen requirements, then choose an aircraft and special weapon suited to the targets. How to replay missions
Bandai Namco’s official campaign overview describes a flow that includes a mission, replay, and debriefing. That is part of the campaign sequence, not documentation of a separate mission-select mode. For replaying an individual sortie after finishing the story, two current guides report that Free Mission becomes available after the first campaign clear: KeenGamer’s Free Mission guide and PowerPyx’s unlock guide.

- After it unlocks, use Free Mission to select and replay an individual mission. The cited guides establish the mode and unlock condition, but do not provide a verified button-by-button menu path; follow the current in-game menus.
- Choose a purpose for the replay, such as practicing a difficult sortie, completing a missed objective, or trying to improve your rank. The guides describe replay as useful for rank, medal, and record cleanup, but do not establish that every mission condition can be replayed or that mission restrictions are removed.
Bandai Namco’s reviewed official pages do not state the Free Mission unlock condition. Treat the post-clear unlock as guide-reported rather than an officially documented rule; patches or updates could affect how the mode works.
How to complete mission objectives
Use the briefing and the objective display during the mission as your authority for what the sortie requires. Bandai Namco’s official walkthrough advises choosing an aircraft and special weapon with both the mission objective and your playstyle in mind. Its gameplay overview describes mission roles that include air-to-air combat, ground support, naval strikes, and battles against superweapons.

Match your loadout to the sortie
- Air targets: Prioritize an aircraft and available special weapon suited to engaging enemy aircraft.
- Ground targets: Choose equipment suited to attacking ground positions or providing support to forces below.
- Naval targets: Select a loadout appropriate for striking ships.
- Superweapon encounters: Read the briefing for the specific threat and select from the available weapons accordingly.
These are broad mission categories, not a guarantee that every sortie has only one target type. Read the actual briefing rather than choosing equipment from a category label alone.
Use progression to expand your options
The official walkthrough says additional aircraft can be unlocked with MRP earned in missions. It also recommends combining upgrade parts to tailor aircraft. If your current selection is a poor fit for a repeated objective, check which aircraft, special weapons, and upgrades you have available before launching again. The official guidance does not provide a universal best aircraft or loadout.
