A missing listing does not prove a mod is malicious, but a copy found elsewhere is not verified just because its name matches. Confirm its source, file status, game compatibility, dependencies, and installation instructions before using it.
Find the exact mod and file you downloaded
Start with the mod’s original name, author, and file or version name. If you previously downloaded it from Nexus Mods, check your download history. Nexus says the history includes manual and Vortex downloads, and can be filtered by game, upload date, last update, uploader, and endorsement status; the page was last updated September 4, 2024.

Use the history to identify the original listing and file, not to assume that an old copy is safe or compatible today. If you saved the archive, compare its filename and version details with the history or original page.
Check the original platform and interpret the status
Fallout 4 on Bethesda.net
Bethesda directs Fallout 4 players to browse mods on Bethesda.net or in the game’s mod menu, where a mod can be added to an in-game library. Bethesda notes that mod experiences vary and use is at the player’s risk. If the mod is no longer listed, that alone does not explain why it disappeared.

Nexus Mods: archived, quarantined, or removed
These statuses are not interchangeable. Nexus’s July 1, 2021 policy announcement said an author could archive a file, making it unavailable for direct download to most users, while some collection or API access might remain possible. Nexus also said moderators could permanently delete rule-violating files. Platform access routes and page behavior can change, so an archived file should not be assumed downloadable.
A file that fails security checks may instead be hidden while Nexus investigates it. Depending on the review, it may be restored or permanently removed. Check the current mod page and files tab for an explanation and any visible file-security badge or moderation status. A blank page or missing file does not establish which of these events occurred.

Decide whether a copy is trustworthy enough to use
Prefer a current file supplied through the original author or official platform, with a clearly identified version and requirements. Nexus says uploaded files go through security checks and virus scanning before becoming available; files that fail checks are quarantined for manual review. Its badges are useful screening signals, not guarantees, and its guidance acknowledges false positives.
Nexus rules prohibit files intended to harm users or their property, including malware, viruses, and adware, and files are subject to scanning and moderation. Those policies do not verify a copy hosted elsewhere. If you find only an unattributed mirror or a repost, matching filenames, screenshots, age, or comments do not establish its provenance or safety. The available platform guidance does not establish safe alternate mirrors for any particular removed mod.

Do not try to bypass moderation with leaked direct links or treat archived metadata as permission to redistribute a file. If you cannot confirm who supplied the copy, what version it is, or why the original became unavailable, the prudent choice is not to install it.
Check compatibility before installing
Read the current description and requirements for the exact game and platform you use. Confirm the game version or build, required DLC or other mods, installation method, and any load-order instructions. Do not assume that a PC file or procedure works on console.

For Fallout 4 Creations, Bethesda tells users to read the description for load-order requirements, download the selected Creation, and use the in-game Load Order menu when needed. Follow the mod’s own instructions as well; the exact requirements depend on the individual mod.
Install, then keep the details needed for recovery
- Record the source: save the original platform page, author name, file name, and version information so you can identify what you installed.
- Check requirements: verify the target game and platform, required DLC or dependencies, installation steps, and load order in the mod description.
- Use the supported route: install from the original platform or author when a current, identifiable file is available. For Bethesda-listed Fallout 4 Creations, use the game’s mod menu or the platform’s supported instructions.
- Review load order: if the mod specifies one, apply it using the method it documents; Bethesda’s Fallout 4 Creation guidance points to the in-game Load Order menu.
Remove a Fallout 4 mod if something goes wrong
Bethesda distinguishes Bethesda.net mods from third-party Fallout 4 mods. It says Bethesda.net mods “uninstall/unload themselves cleanly when you delete or deactivate them.” For a third-party Fallout 4 mod, Bethesda says complete removal may require a clean reinstall: its support procedure includes uninstalling the game, deleting residual files in the game folder, deleting Fallout4.ini and plugins.txt, then reinstalling. Follow Bethesda’s Fallout 4 removal instructions for the full procedure. This recommendation is specific to Fallout 4; do not apply it automatically to other Fallout games.
