For a phone that also needs to excel at cameras, software support and everyday use, a mainstream flagship may be the better choice. There is no controlled, same-game comparison here that proves one category is universally faster.
Will a flagship phone run demanding games?
Yes. A flagship can be a capable gaming phone, not merely a compromise for casual play. Tom’s Guide reports that the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, with a 1–120 Hz display and Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, showed no throttling or discomfort during its one-hour Genshin Impact test. That is one reviewer’s result under one test, not a guarantee for every game, session, or flagship.
The practical question is whether a particular phone sustains the performance and frame rate you want in the games you actually play. A powerful processor or high-refresh display alone does not establish how a phone will behave over a long session.
What distinguishes a gaming phone?
Cooling for extended play
Gaming phones are designed with sustained play in mind. ASUS describes the ROG Phone 9’s thermal design and offers the optional AeroActive Cooler X Pro. ASUS claims that the cooler combination provides up to 29% more effective cooling; this is a manufacturer claim, not an independently established comparison with a flagship’s cooling system. Check compatibility before buying an accessory.

- FIT EVERYONE IN THE SHOT: Group selfies are easier on your Samsung phone with a wider front camera⁴ that captures more of the scene, so no one gets left out of the moment
These features make a gaming phone worth considering if you regularly play demanding games for long stretches. They do not prove that every gaming phone will remain cooler or faster than every flagship. Compare independent sustained-load testing for the exact models when available.
Gaming controls and accessories
Some gaming phones add controls beyond the touchscreen. ASUS documents AirTrigger controls on the ROG Phone 8 and a plug-in ROG Tessen controller for that model. These options may suit players who want shoulder-style inputs or a controller-like setup. Confirm the exact phone and accessory compatibility: the cited Tessen information is for ROG Phone 8, not every ROG model.

Refresh rate—and the frame rate a game actually supports
A screen’s maximum refresh rate is not the same as the frame rate a game will deliver. ASUS specifies the ROG Phone 9’s 6.78-inch FHD+ (2400 × 1080) AMOLED display as adaptive 1–120 Hz, with modes up to 165 Hz in system settings and 185 Hz in Game Genie. The Galaxy S26 Ultra is listed by Tom’s Guide with a 1–120 Hz display. In either case, what you see depends on the game’s support and the phone’s settings; a higher maximum does not mean every title runs at that rate.
Gaming phone vs. flagship: what to compare
| What matters | Gaming-phone example | Flagship example | How to judge it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Refresh rate | ASUS lists the ROG Phone 9 at adaptive 1–120 Hz, with higher modes up to 165 Hz in settings and 185 Hz in Game Genie. | Tom’s Guide lists the Galaxy S26 Ultra at 1–120 Hz. | Check whether your games support higher frame rates and whether the relevant mode is enabled. |
| Thermals | ASUS describes ROG Phone 9 cooling and offers a separate active cooler. | Tom’s Guide reports no throttling or discomfort during its one-hour Genshin Impact test on the S26 Ultra. | Look for independent tests of the exact phones under comparable games, settings and session lengths. These examples are not a controlled head-to-head. |
| Inputs | ASUS documents AirTrigger controls on ROG Phone 8 and a ROG Tessen controller for that model. | The cited S26 Ultra source does not establish an equivalent built-in gaming control. | Decide whether shoulder-style inputs matter and verify support for the specific model and accessory. |
| Battery | ASUS lists a 5800 mAh ROG Phone 9 battery and claims at least 4.5 hours of heavy gaming. | The cited Tom’s Guide passage does not give a comparable S26 Ultra gaming-runtime result. | Compare gaming-runtime tests performed under similar conditions. Capacity and a manufacturer estimate are not equivalent to a reviewer’s test. |
| Everyday use | The cited ROG Phone 9 sources do not provide a direct camera comparison. | Tom’s Guide presents the S26 Ultra as a flagship with broader camera features. | Assess camera quality, software support, size and daily usability for the exact phones you are considering. |
How to choose for your gaming habits
Choose a gaming phone if gaming is the priority
- You play demanding games for long sessions and want a phone designed around gaming thermals.
- Built-in triggers or compatible gaming accessories would improve how you play.
- Your games support higher frame rates and you will use the settings that enable them.
- You are willing to weigh gaming-focused features against the cameras and everyday-use priorities of the alternatives.
The ASUS ROG Phone 9 is one example to investigate, not a blanket recommendation for every player. Its battery capacity is 5800 mAh, and ASUS claims at least 4.5 hours of heavy gaming; treat that runtime as a vendor claim rather than a verified head-to-head result.

Choose a flagship if you want one all-round phone
- You want strong gaming capability alongside cameras and broader everyday features.
- You do not need gaming-specific controls or a separate cooler.
- Independent testing of your preferred games shows the exact flagship performs well enough for your sessions.
The Galaxy S26 Ultra is a relevant example: Tom’s Guide reports a positive one-hour Genshin Impact test, but that finding should not be generalized to every flagship or every gaming workload.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What evidence can—and cannot—settle the comparison
The available examples describe different devices and evidence: ASUS product specifications and manufacturer claims for the ROG Phone 9, and Tom’s Guide’s review test of the Galaxy S26 Ultra. They do not compare the phones in the same games, at matching settings, over matching session lengths and conditions. So they cannot establish a category-wide winner for temperature, sustained frame rate or battery life.
