Look for heat damage, deformation, damaged pins, contamination, a loose or partly inserted plug, or cable strain close to the socket. If you find anything abnormal, stop using the system and contact the graphics-card or power-supply manufacturer for replacement or service guidance.
Inspect the connector safely
- Shut down and unplug the PC. Disconnect mains power before touching the cable or connector. ASUS gives this as the first step in its RTX 50-series power-connector troubleshooting guidance.
- Examine the cable and plug. Look near the connector for melting, discoloration, deformation, unusual bends, or other signs of heat or physical damage. ASUS says to replace a cable immediately if it is bent, deformed, overheated, or otherwise abnormal. Seasonic likewise says its cable should not be bent after connection or forced close to the connector; follow the instructions for your specific cable.
- Check that the connection is fully seated. The plug should be inserted and latched, with no visible gap between the plug and socket. If you use an adapter, check that both ends are firmly connected. Seasonic’s guidance for its cable stresses that connectors must be inserted, click-locked, and properly seated.
- Inspect the card-side socket. Look for dirt, broken or damaged pins, or other visible damage. Do not probe, bend, or attempt to repair the socket; contact the graphics-card maker’s service team if it looks damaged.
What warning software can—and cannot—tell you
On supported ASUS cards, Power Detector+ monitors current on six sense pins. ASUS says its feature displays a red alert if a pin reports 0 A or exceeds 9.2 A. Those are alert conditions for ASUS’s specific tool, not universal thresholds for all RTX 5090 cards, and they are not connector-temperature limits. Treat an alert as a reason to investigate the cable and connection, not as a replacement for physical inspection. ASUS recommends contacting its service center if the alert remains after its troubleshooting checks.
A visual inspection also has limits: a normal-looking connector does not establish that there is no hidden contact problem. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not give owners a generally applicable safe connector-temperature threshold, so do not use an invented temperature cutoff as a pass/fail test.
Choose a replacement only for your exact hardware
If a cable is damaged or a manufacturer diagnostic points to a cable fault, replace it only with a cable explicitly compatible with the exact PSU model and approved or specified for the graphics card. A matching plug shape alone does not prove that a cable is electrically compatible. Check the card maker’s instructions and the PSU documentation, and ensure there is enough clearance for the cable to reach the socket without being forced sideways.

For the RTX 5090 Founders Edition, NVIDIA’s setup information lists an included adapter using three or four PCIe 8-pin leads, or a PCIe Gen 5 power cable. The setup section specifies a 450 W-or-greater Gen 5 cable, while the general specification table lists a 600 W PCIe Gen 5 cable. Follow the documentation shipped with your card and PSU rather than treating either figure or option as a universal instruction for every RTX 5090: add-in-card models can differ.
Power figures depend on the card and system
NVIDIA lists 575 W total graphics power for the Founders Edition; that is a reference specification, not a measured draw or universal rating for every board-partner card. NVIDIA’s current Founders Edition setup guidance lists an 850 W minimum PSU rating, while its specification footnote recommends 1000 W for a PC configured with a Ryzen 9 9950X and notes that requirements vary by system. Check the requirements for your particular card and ask the PSU manufacturer if your configuration is uncertain.

Why seating matters—and what history does not prove
In a 2022 update about RTX 4090 reports, NVIDIA said its findings at that time suggested incompletely plugged connectors were a common issue and recommended securing the connector before powering on. That historical statement helps explain why seating is worth checking, but it does not establish an RTX 5090 failure rate or identify the cause of any individual incident.
