If your RTX 5090 power cable is getting hot, first rule out a poor or incompatible connection: shut down, verify the cable is approved for your exact GPU and PSU, then make sure the GPU plug is fully seated and the cable is routed without strain. A fan, power limit, or different cable does not make a damaged connector safe. Stop using the PC if you see damage or suspect overheating, and contact the GPU or PSU manufacturer.

What to do first if the cable feels hot

  1. Shut down and disconnect mains power before touching the connector. NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 guide directs users to power off and disconnect the power cord before removing hardware. Do not unplug or reseat a live connection.
  2. Check for visible damage. Look for discoloration, melting, deformation, or other signs of heat damage at either connector. If you find damage or suspect the connection has overheated, stop using the system and contact the GPU or PSU maker. Do not treat cooling, reduced GPU power, or swapping cables as evidence that damaged hardware is safe.
  3. Confirm the power path is supported for your exact card and PSU. Use the graphics card and PSU manufacturers’ documentation; do not choose a modular PSU cable based only on connector shape.
  4. Reseat only if the parts appear undamaged and the correct connection is confirmed. Insert the GPU plug fully and evenly until it sits flush against the receptacle, then ensure the PSU-side connection is secure.
  5. Route the cable so it does not pull sideways on the plug or bend tightly beside it. If the case leaves too little room, change the cable route or case arrangement rather than forcing the connector into place.

NVIDIA’s instruction for the RTX 5090 Founders Edition is explicit: “Ensure the power plug is fully inserted and seated flush against the power receptacle.”

Choose a cable configuration documented for your GPU and PSU

The right cable is not determined by the GPU connector alone. Check the exact graphics card model and revision, the PSU model, and the PSU maker’s compatibility information before connecting a native cable or adapter. A modular PSU cable from another model or brand may have a matching plug but a different pinout.

RTX 5090 Founders Edition guidance

NVIDIA’s RTX 5090 product specifications list 575 W Total Graphics Power and 1000 W recommended system power, and note that add-in-board specifications vary. Those are GPU/system power figures, not a target or safe temperature for the cable.

As for the 12+4pin connector, 2 of 4 pins are connected with power wires while another 2 pins are GND wires

The RTX 5090 Founders Edition user guide specifies a minimum 1000 W PSU and two supported arrangements: the included NVIDIA adapter fed by at least four independent dedicated PCIe 8-pin cables, or a single 600 W-or-greater PCIe Gen 5 16-pin cable. For an adapter, NVIDIA recommends connecting the power dongle to the GPU first so it can be seated firmly and evenly.

NVIDIA’s product-page installation panel depicts 3 PCIe 8-pin connectors and a 450 W-or-greater Gen 5 cable, while its user guide gives the figures above. Do not reconcile those depictions by assumption: use the current instructions for your exact card revision and contact NVIDIA support if the applicable configuration is unclear. Other manufacturers’ RTX 5090 cards can have different requirements, so follow their model-specific documentation rather than treating Founders Edition guidance as universal.

When choosing or replacing a cable

A native 12V-2×6 cable may be appropriate for a compatible PSU, but confirm the exact PSU model against its manufacturer’s cable compatibility table. ASUS advises buyers choosing a PSU to prefer one with a native 12V-2×6 cable; that does not make a cable interchangeable across modular PSUs. If a cable is damaged, stop using it and ask the GPU or PSU maker which replacement is approved.

When comparing a supported cable, the included adapter, or a replacement, check the exact GPU/PSU pairing, documented wattage and configuration, whether the cable reaches without force at the plug, and the cable maker’s installation instructions. Do not use an aftermarket cable solely because its advertised thermal claims sound reassuring.

Seat both ends and avoid stressing the connector

With power disconnected and compatibility confirmed, insert the GPU-side plug evenly and fully; inspect that it is flush against the receptacle. Then make sure the PSU-side plug is secure. ASUS’s cable guidance says to “Take the time to plug in the connector snugly and securely at both ends.”

Leave enough space for the wire bundle to leave the GPU connector naturally. Avoid a tight bend or sideways pull right beside the plug, which can strain the connection. CableMod recommends at least 35 mm between the connector and the start of a bend; this is CableMod’s recommendation, not a universal standard. If your case cannot provide a relaxed route, consider a different case layout or a cable explicitly supported by the hardware makers rather than forcing the bend.

Do not use temperature monitoring or vendor tests as a safety threshold

NVIDIA’s reviewed RTX 5090 guidance does not specify a general cable-temperature target. The card’s 575 W TGP is not a cable temperature limit, and a temperature reading alone cannot establish that a connector is undamaged or correctly installed.

Some ASUS ROG Astral and Matrix cards support per-pin monitoring through GPU Tweak III Power Detector+. Availability is model-specific, and monitoring is not a substitute for correct installation or a reason to continue using a suspected faulty connection. Do not probe, modify, or deliberately create an imbalance in the connector to test its temperature; ASUS describes its imbalance work as vendor laboratory testing, not a home procedure.

ASUS reports that in an intentionally extreme imbalance test, a modified standard cable reached 146°C while its ROG Equalizer was about 74°C. ASUS also says the Equalizer stayed below its cited 105°C material-rated threshold during a 10-day constant 600 W test at 55°C ambient. These are ASUS vendor test results, not independent comparisons or expected RTX 5090 operating temperatures; they do not establish a general safe cable-temperature threshold.

When to stop and get manufacturer help

  • Stop using the PC if a connector or cable shows visible heat damage, or if you suspect it has overheated.
  • Do not try to make a potentially damaged connection safe with a fan, a software power limit, or an unverified replacement cable.
  • Contact the GPU or PSU maker with the exact card and PSU models and describe what you observed. Follow their instructions before putting the system back into service.
  • If there is no damage but the plug cannot sit flush, the cable will not route without force, or compatibility is uncertain, do not power the system until the manufacturer confirms the correct configuration.
