Use low-disclosure checks together: keep chatting in the dating app, review what its verification badge actually checks, and consider a short in-app voice or video call. If a profile seems suspicious, a reverse-image search may reveal reused photos or inconsistent identity details. None of these steps proves who someone is or guarantees your safety; protect personal information and make a first meeting easy to leave.
What each check can—and cannot—tell you

Badges are limited checks
Tinder says its optional ID + Photo Verification checks whether the ID photo appears to match the person’s selfie and profile photos. Tinder also says the feature is available only in select test markets and does not guarantee the ID is valid or that the person is safe. Check the current in-app explanation rather than assuming a badge means a full background check: Tinder’s ID Verification details.
Calls provide a live impression, not proof
Tinder describes a phone or video call as a useful screening tool, and Bumble offers in-app voice and video calls. Availability and labels can vary, so check the app. If you are not comfortable with a call, you do not need to provide your number or email just to satisfy someone else’s request. A person’s willingness to call—or refusal—does not by itself establish identity.
Search results are clues, not certificates
The FTC recommends searching a profile picture when someone seems suspicious and checking for another name or inconsistent details. A photo that appears under another identity is a warning to pause and reassess; an image search that finds nothing unusual is not confirmation. Do not send documents or disclose private details to resolve uncertainty. The FTC’s romance-scam guidance explains this check.

Screen a match while keeping control of your information
- Keep early conversations in the app. Staying on-platform preserves access to its block and report tools. Be wary of pressure to switch quickly to another messaging service; RAINN advises resisting that pressure while trust is forming. RAINN’s dating-app safety guidance covers safer communication and reporting.
- Talk naturally over time. Ask ordinary, open-ended questions and notice whether details remain consistent. You do not need to interrogate someone or prove your own trustworthiness by disclosing sensitive information.
- Suggest a brief in-app call if you feel comfortable. Use the app’s voice or video feature where available. Keep the call short and end it if the interaction feels wrong.
- Use an image search only if something raises concern. Look for a reused picture, different name, or conflicting details. Treat a mismatch as a reason to pause, not an invitation to investigate someone invasively.
- Stop if pressure or contradictions persist. You can end contact, block the account, and report suspicious behavior through the service instead of trying to settle every uncertainty.
Keep sensitive information private
- Do not share your home or work address, precise location, financial information, or government ID to prove trust.
- Avoid sending intimate images, especially under pressure. Once shared, you may lose control over where they go.
- Do not send money or gifts to a romantic interest you have not met in person. The FTC identifies money requests as a serious romance-scam warning.
Tinder likewise advises users not to share personal information such as an address, location, or financial information. Review Tinder’s safety tips and use the app’s reporting tools if behavior concerns you.
Recognize when to pause or end contact
One awkward interaction does not establish someone’s identity or intent. But you do not need proof of a scam to stop talking. Take pressure, evasion, and inconsistent details seriously—especially when several occur together.

- They insist on moving off-platform before you are comfortable.
- They avoid reasonable, low-pressure screening while pushing for a private meeting.
- Names, photos, or basic details do not line up, and explanations do not resolve the mismatch.
- They ask for money, gifts, financial details, or intimate images.
- They make you feel guilty or unsafe for setting boundaries or ending the conversation.
If you suspect a romance scam, report the account to the dating service. In the United States, you can also report it to the FTC’s ReportFraud service.

- Choose a populated public place rather than a private home or isolated location.
- Tell someone you trust who you are meeting, where you are going, and when you expect to be back.
- Keep your phone charged and arrange transportation you control.
