E-Day keeps Gears’ cover-centered combat, but broadens how players move through and use the battlefield. The Coalition describes more cover types, heights, and actions, while Xbox Wire’s campaign preview reports slide, jump, vertical routes, and new flanking opportunities. Weapons and the threat context also change. Some familiar mechanics, including Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels, are not included at launch.
Does E-Day still use cover-based combat?
Yes. Cover remains the organizing idea: players read the combat space and move between protected positions. The Coalition says it rebuilt the cover system rather than replacing the cover-based premise, adding more kinds of cover, more heights, and more actions. Its gameplay update states, “Our battlefields are defined by their cover layout.” The Coalition’s July 31, 2026 gameplay update describes the changes.

Low cover changes the choices within a fight
E-Day’s low-ground cover is intended to make the space between taller barriers matter. A Gear can crouch behind low walls or debris, or drop prone after upper cover is destroyed. The Coalition says this position is slower and leaves the player more exposed, so it offers a situational option rather than a safe substitute for substantial cover.
Can you slide and jump in E-Day?
Yes. Xbox Wire’s August 25, 2026 campaign hands-on preview describes sliding under objects, around corners, or into cover, as well as jumping and vertical combat routes. The preview gives examples such as reaching elevated flanks and balconies. These are additional ways to approach an encounter; the available official material does not provide a complete inventory of the original game’s movement actions or prove a measured speed increase.
#1 Best Overall
- AN ORIGIN STORY BEGINS — Fight alongside Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago in the gripping origin story of Emergence Day, as the Locust Horde erupts from below.
- A DARKER, GRITTIER THREAT — Face reimagined enemies and a terrifying underground invasion that restores the fear, dread, and intensity at the heart of the Gears of War series.
- MULTIPLAYER EVOLVED — Battle in Horde Siege for large‑scale PvE action or prove your skill in refined Versus PvP with greater precision and competitive depth.
- CLASSIC COMBAT, MODERNIZED — Experience signature cover‑based gameplay enhanced with updated movement, traversal, and controls that feel like Gears while playing like something new.
- CO‑OP YOUR WAY — Play online with up to four players across Campaign, Horde Siege, and Versus, or team up locally with 2‑player split‑screen co‑op on console.
The practical shift is that movement can connect cover, elevation, and flanking routes in more varied ways. That expands the options for entering or repositioning in a fight without making the battlefield cease to be cover-led. Xbox Wire’s campaign preview reports these examples.
How do E-Day’s weapons differ?
The Coalition has described weapon-specific changes rather than a wholesale remake of every weapon. Its examples include a Hammerburst inspired by the original Gears version, a Prototype Lancer, and an arsenal that includes both familiar weapons and new additions.

What does E-Day change about the Lancer and its chainsaw?
E-Day takes place fourteen years before the original Gears of War, during the first Locust emergence. In the game’s timeline, the chainsaw-equipped Lancer has not yet come into being. Xbox Wire’s 2024 interview describes the MK 1 Lancer shown in the reveal as having a detachable bayonet and frames E-Day as telling the chainsaw Lancer’s origin. Nicole Fawcette, Brand Director at The Coalition, said, “ [The Chainsaw Lancer] doesn’t currently exist in that period… but it’s not a Gears game if you’re not chainsawing Locust!”
This is a story-and-design distinction, not evidence that the familiar chainsaw identity is absent from the game. The interview discusses the weapon’s place in the timeline; the available material does not establish every implementation detail of how it appears in combat. Read the Xbox Wire interview, “Reinventing A Mad World.”

Do enemies and encounters feel different?
E-Day presents the Locust as a newly encountered horror, and The Coalition describes its Drone as redesigned to be more formidable. Xbox Wire’s preview also discusses emergence holes as a reactive encounter mechanic. These descriptions point to a different narrative context and announced encounter design; they do not establish that enemy AI or difficulty is objectively superior to the original.
The setting matters to combat’s tone: the COG is facing the Locust threat at its first emergence, rather than fighting a familiar, established enemy. The Coalition’s current feature and tuning update discusses the game’s shooting implementation and launch feature set, while the Xbox Wire preview reports campaign encounter examples. The Coalition update, “Emergence Begins – Tomorrow,” and Xbox Wire’s campaign preview provide those details.
Which familiar Gears mechanics are missing at launch?
The Coalition specifically names Meat Shields and Chainsaw Duels among legacy features not included at launch. It says it will consider what to deliver or improve after launch or in a future title. That wording means they are absent at launch; it does not establish that they are permanently removed or promise that they will be added later. The Coalition’s feature and tuning update gives the launch qualification.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How strong is the comparison with the original?
The evidence supports a comparison of design direction and selected features, not a complete mechanic-by-mechanic verdict. Official descriptions identify Gears’ trademark cover-to-cover foundation, E-Day’s expanded cover and mobility options, weapon examples, and specific launch omissions. Xbox Wire’s hands-on preview adds campaign movement and encounter examples, but it is not a controlled side-by-side test of the original and E-Day.

Accordingly, the clearest distinction is not “cover versus no cover” or a proven increase in combat speed. It is a wider set of described ways to use cover, reposition, reach vertical routes, and approach fights, alongside changed weapons and a different story-era threat.
