To keep a maang tikka from slipping, centre it over a clean hair parting and secure its hook into a substantial section of hair at the roots—not just loose surface strands. For a heavy ornament or smooth hair, cross two bobby pins over the hook; with open hair, add a small braid or puff and a second anchor near the crown. Check the fit by turning your head and bending forward before you leave.
How to secure a maang tikka step by step
- Style your hair first. Make a clear centre parting and finish the hairstyle before putting on the tikka.
- Position the ornament. Lay its chain along the parting and centre the pendant on your forehead.
- Anchor the front. Secure the hook or pin into a substantial section of hair at the start of the parting, close to the roots. Avoid catching only a few surface strands, which provide less grip.
- Add support if needed. For a heavy tikka or smooth hair, place two bobby pins across the hook in an X. If the chain needs more structure, weave it through a small braid before pinning.
- Check the hold. Turn your head and bend forward. If the pendant shifts or the hook pulls, reposition the anchor or add support.
- Put on the tikka before a dupatta or veil. This order is recommended by Kansya’s styling guide.
Adjust the anchor to your hair and tikka
Heavy ornament
Use a root-level anchor and cross two pins over the hook. A small braid or supported updo can provide a firmer base and help distribute the pull. The styling guides do not specify a weight threshold at which extra support becomes necessary.
Smooth, fine, or recently oiled hair
Loose, smooth strands may give the hook less grip. Add pins or build a small structured anchor such as a braid or puff. Some vendor guides suggest optional texturizing or setting spray, or hair wax, to improve grip. These are styling suggestions, not proven fixes; no particular product or amount is established.
Open hair
Loose hair alone may not provide enough structure. Add a small puff or braid near the crown, then secure the chain or rear hook there as a second point of contact as well as anchoring the front.

What to do if it still shifts
- The pendant slides forward or sideways: Re-centre the chain along the parting and secure the front hook into a fuller section of hair at the roots.
- The hook pulls against the hair: Add crossed pins or create a braid or puff to support the attachment.
- The tikka moves when you bend: Adjust the anchor or add a second crown attachment, then repeat the movement check.
