Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo choose a dating app with useful safety controls, read its privacy policy, find out exactly what any verification badge checks, and confirm that you can readily block and report people. Treat verification as a limited identity signal—not proof that someone is trustworthy or safe. Features and policies can change and vary by location, so check the current app and its policy before signing up.
What to check in a dating app’s privacy settings
Start with the app’s privacy policy and in-app controls. Look for what information it collects, why it uses it, how long it keeps it, and what choices you have. Consider the information you would need to provide or share to use the service.
- Profile and communication data: Check whether the service collects photos, profile details, messages, or other content you provide.
- Location and device data: Look for details about geolocation and device information, and whether the app provides controls that limit access or sharing.
- Identity-check data: Find out whether verification involves a selfie, government ID, or other sensitive information, and read how the policy says that data is handled.
- Retention and use: Look for the policy’s explanation of how information is used and retained; don’t assume two apps handle the same data in the same way.
For example, Bumble’s privacy policy lists phone number, photos, geolocation, and device information among information used by the service. It also describes government ID and selfie data in applicable verification contexts. Those are Bumble-specific disclosures, not a description of every dating app’s practices. Read Bumble’s Privacy Policy and compare it with the current policy of any other app you are considering.
What a verification badge does—and does not—tell you
Ask what the app says a particular check establishes. A photo check, an ID check, and an age check are not interchangeable. Read the app’s current help text for the badge and check whether verification is optional or required where you live.

Bumble lists both photo verification and ID verification in its Safety Centre. Tinder describes photo verification in its safety features. These descriptions establish the types of features each service says it offers; they do not show that either app has independently proven a user’s intentions, conduct, or criminal history. A badge is a limited signal, not a safety guarantee.
How to check blocking and reporting before you need them
Find the report and block controls while you are setting up or reviewing the app. Check whether the service lets you report both a profile and behavior, whether you can report someone after unmatching, and what blocking changes—for example, whether it prevents future matching or contact.

The Australian eSafety Commissioner advises: “Check that your dating app or service has a straight-forward process to report, block or take action against someone if you need to.” Its online dating guidance also recommends checking for safety features such as reporting, blocking, and identity verification.
Tinder’s reporting instructions, last updated December 27, 2024, describe reporting profiles from discovery or a match list and say you can still report someone after unmatching. App layouts and procedures can change, so confirm the current steps in Tinder before relying on them.

Compare communication and date-sharing controls
Look beyond badges and moderation controls. Features that help you communicate or share plans without immediately exchanging personal contact details may be useful, but their availability and operation depend on the app and your location.
Bumble lists in-app voice and video calls, Share Date for sharing date details with a trusted contact, and block, report, and unmatch tools in its Safety Centre. Check the app’s current interface and local availability rather than assuming every user has access to every feature.

A practical way to compare two or more apps
Use the same questions for each service. This keeps the comparison focused on disclosed features and policies instead of treating a badge or marketing claim as a measure of overall safety.
- Read each privacy policy. Note the data categories collected, stated purposes, retention information, and available controls.
- Define each verification badge. Record whether the check is for photos, government ID, age, or something else, and what the app says it confirms.
- Locate report and block controls. Check how to report profile content or behavior, what happens after blocking, and whether reporting remains available after unmatching.
- Review communication and date tools. See whether the app offers in-app calls or a way to share plans with a trusted contact.
- Check transparency and recourse. Look for explanations of moderation, report handling, and how account decisions can be appealed.
- Confirm current, local availability. Features and policies may vary by app version and location; use the app and official help pages relevant to you.
Official feature descriptions help you understand what a service says it offers, but they do not establish which app has lower rates of harm or more effective moderation. The available information also does not provide a comparable response-time or outcome measure for reports, so don’t rank apps on those grounds.

What app safety features cannot guarantee
Verification, blocking, and reporting can help you assess profiles, control contact, and alert the service. They cannot guarantee how another person will behave or prevent harm at an in-person meeting. Treat each tool as one part of your decision-making rather than a substitute for your own judgment.
In Australia, eSafety notes that it does not enforce the dating services code discussed on its page and has no legislative powers relating to the code’s operation. Code participation should therefore not be mistaken for government certification of a service’s safety.
