Stop eating it and check the package against the recall notice for your location. If you have a wheat allergy and develop breathing trouble, throat swelling, faintness, or a rapidly worsening reaction, use your prescribed emergency plan and get emergency help now. If you have celiac disease but no signs of an acute allergy, stop eating the product and return to your gluten-free diet.

First, identify the product and respond to symptoms

  1. Stop eating the gochujang. Keep the container and its label; do not serve or use any remaining product until you have checked the relevant recall notice.
  2. If you have a wheat allergy, watch for an allergic reaction. Symptoms can begin within minutes to a few hours and include hives or rash, itching or tingling in the mouth, swelling of the face, lips, tongue or throat, vomiting or diarrhea, cough or wheeze, dizziness, trouble breathing, or loss of consciousness. Follow your established emergency plan and use prescribed epinephrine when indicated. Trouble breathing, throat swelling, faintness, or rapid worsening warrants emergency help now. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration advises people with known food allergies who develop symptoms to stop eating, consider emergency medication such as epinephrine, and seek medical attention (FDA food allergy guidance). UK government guidance likewise says to get medical help immediately if you feel ill or have an allergic reaction after eating (UK government guidance).
  3. If you have celiac disease or another gluten-related disorder and no acute allergy symptoms, do not eat more and return to your gluten-free diet. Accidental exposure symptoms vary and can last from a few hours to several days; symptoms alone cannot establish the extent of intestinal effects. Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust advises drinking plenty of water if vomiting or diarrhea occurs, checking with a pharmacist or GP before taking medicines for constipation, diarrhea, or headache, and contacting a GP if symptoms are severe and persist (NHS guidance on accidental gluten exposure).

If symptoms are severe or persistent, or you are unsure whether the reaction is an emergency, contact local emergency services or a healthcare professional. Do not induce vomiting or try a home test or supplement as treatment.

Check whether your jar matches the current Canadian warning

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) posted a Taeyangcho Gochujang (Hot Pepper Paste) warning on October 3, 2026, for products containing wheat that is not declared on the label. The notice lists distribution in Alberta, British Columbia, and Saskatchewan. It applies to the package sizes and UPCs below, for all codes where wheat is not declared:

Package size UPC
170 g 8 801075 012323
500 g 8 801075 012316
1 kg 8 801075 012620

Compare the brand, size, UPC, and label with the CFIA Taeyangcho warning. CFIA says not to consume, serve, use, sell, or distribute affected product; return it to the place of purchase or throw it out. The notice says the recall followed a consumer complaint, reports no associated reactions as of publication, and says the agency is investigating and may recall other products. That report does not establish zero risk.

Thank-you Gochujang Korean Chili Paste, Reduced Sugar, Allulose, 8.81 oz
  • TWO FERMENTED PASTES, TWO DIFFERENT JOBS - Gochujang and Ssamjang: Gochujang is the chili paste you cook with: tteokbokki, bibimbap, marinades, stews. Ssamjang is the doenjang-based dip that stays on the table for lettuce wraps and grilled meat. Korean kitchens keep both because neither substitutes for the other. Available singly, in twin packs and as a set.
  • REDUCED SUGAR, NO WHEAT FLOUR - Allulose and Meju: Both pastes are sweetened with liquid allulose rather than corn syrup, and both are built on traditionally fermented Korean meju soybean instead of wheat or glutinous rice flour used as thickeners. That is what keeps the body thick and the ingredient list short at the same time.
  • SINCE 1965, THIRD-GENERATION KOREAN MAKER - HACCP Certified: It began with a grandmother in Sindangdong, Seoul in 1965 and is run today by the third generation of the same family, which holds a Korean patent for its reduced-sugar fermented paste process. Made in a HACCP-certified facility with Korean-sourced raw materials. No MSG added, no artificial preservatives, no artificial colors or flavors.
  • CERTIFICATIONS: The ssamjang carries official Traditional Korean Food certification from Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, certification number 1065. The gochujang is certified by Sugarwise, the international sugar-claims authority. Both are registered marks rather than marketing phrases.
  • 8.81 oz (250g) JARS - Storage and Ingredients: Store in a cool, dry place before opening. Refrigerate after opening and keep lids sealed to protect the ferment. Contains SOY. Contains SOY. Depending on the items in this set, may also contain FISH (anchovy), SESAME and WHEAT. Check each label before use. Product of Korea.

This is a specific Canadian notice, not a recall of every gochujang brand, lot, or market. If your product is from elsewhere, or its identifiers do not match, check the food-safety authority for your location rather than assuming either that it is included or that it is safe.

Wheat allergy and celiac disease are different

A wheat allergy can cause an immediate allergic reaction, including anaphylaxis. Celiac disease is an autoimmune reaction to gluten, which occurs in wheat, rye, barley, and crossbreeds. A person with either diagnosis should avoid further exposure and follow their individualized clinician-provided plan; the response to an acute allergic reaction is not the same as care after gluten exposure without allergy symptoms.

In the United States, “gluten-free” is a voluntary packaged-food claim. FDA rules require a food bearing that claim to contain less than 20 parts per million (ppm) gluten and meet ingredient restrictions (FDA gluten-free labeling guidance). The threshold applies to products making that U.S. claim; it is not an emergency-treatment threshold. A missing gluten-free claim does not itself prove a food contains gluten, and a gluten-free claim is not blanket assurance for someone with a wheat allergy. Check allergen declarations and recall identifiers. Other jurisdictions have their own labeling requirements.

Keep details for your clinician and the food-safety authority

Note when the product was eaten, its brand, package size, UPC and code, when symptoms began and how they changed, and any medication used. Keep the package if possible. The FDA asks consumers reporting adverse events to include purchase and reaction details; report through the food-safety authority for your jurisdiction (FDA adverse event reporting).

Thank-you Korean Gochujang and Ssamjang Bundle, Reduced Sugar, 2 Pack
  • TWO THAT ACTUALLY GO TOGETHER - Gochujang and Ssamjang: This bundle pairs the cooking paste plus the table dip, which is the combination most people end up buying separately anyway. Gochujang goes in the pan. Ssamjang stays on the table for lettuce wraps and grilled meat. Between them you can cook a Korean dinner and set the table for it.
  • REDUCED SUGAR ACROSS BOTH - Allulose, Not Corn Syrup: Regular Korean sauces lean on corn syrup and rice syrup for balance. Both items here are sweetened with liquid allulose instead, a low-calorie sweetener found naturally in figs and raisins. Same sweet-heat character, a fraction of the sugar load, on both sides of the bundle.
  • WHERE THEY GO: Tteokbokki, bibimbap, Korean BBQ, lettuce wraps, ramen, rice bowls, fried rice, tacos, eggs, pizza, fries, dumplings, wings, tofu and roasted vegetables. Between the two you cover cooking and finishing, which is the gap most single-jar buyers run into a week after opening the first one.
  • BUNDLE OF TWO - Storage and Ingredients: Store in a cool, dry place before opening. Refrigerate after opening and keep lids and caps sealed. Contains SOY. Contains SOY. Depending on the items in this set, may also contain FISH (anchovy), SESAME and WHEAT. Check each label before use. Product of Korea.

Do not confuse this warning with an older recall

CFIA published a separate Daesang gochujang warning on August 21, 2025. It covered a 500 g product, UPC 8 80 1052 802022, code 2025.10.29, distributed in Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec; wheat was undeclared and one associated reaction was reported (CFIA Daesang notice). That historical notice concerns a different product and does not show that every Daesang product or any current lot is affected.
