For most US shoppers, the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is the strongest low-cost everyday pick: Samsung lists it from $199.99, and it combines an AMOLED display, expandable storage and a stated six-year update commitment. Choose the current Google Pixel A-series phone if camera quality and longer software support matter more, or the Motorola Moto G Power 5G (2026) if battery and value are your priorities. Prices, carrier deals and availability change, so confirm the exact model and checkout price before buying.

The values above come from Samsung product information and 2026 buying guides, not a uniform head-to-head lab test. Prices and specifications may differ by seller, carrier, configuration or region.
Why the Samsung Galaxy A17 5G is the low-cost pick
Samsung’s US A-series page lists the Galaxy A17 5G at a $199.99 starting price, with 128 GB of storage plus expansion, a 5,000 mAh battery and a 50 MP + 12 MP + 5 MP rear-camera listing. It is a practical mix for calls, messaging, browsing, video and everyday photos, without paying step-up-phone prices. Samsung also lists six years of security and software updates on its A-series page; confirm the exact terms for the model and market you are buying.
PhoneArena’s 2026 guide names the A17 as a low-cost US pick, citing its AMOLED screen, full-day battery in the reviewer’s use and stated six-year software commitment. That battery assessment is a reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee: your signal strength, screen brightness, apps and usage affect endurance. The listed capacity alone cannot tell you how long your own charge will last.

Retailer discounts, carrier promotions, storage variants, taxes and activation terms can change what you pay. Compare the unlocked and carrier versions at checkout rather than assuming a promotion is the standard price.
When to choose a Pixel or Motorola instead
Choose a current Pixel A-series phone for camera and update priorities
2026 buying guides include the Pixel 10a as a camera-oriented candidate and describe seven years of updates. If photography and long software support outweigh the lowest possible purchase price, check the current Pixel A-series model’s live price, availability and exact update terms before deciding.

The Pixel 9a is useful as context for the A-series formula, but it is not the default new-Pixel recommendation here: Google’s US store page showed it out of stock when checked. Its official US launch price was $499, with availability beginning April 10, 2025. Google’s US specifications list a 5,100 mAh typical battery and a 5G Sub-6 model. Google advertises 30+ hours under estimated usage and up to 100 hours with Extreme Battery Saver; those are estimates under stated test conditions, not guaranteed everyday battery life. Extreme Battery Saver disables features, including 5G. Check the current Pixel 10a listing rather than treating the prior model’s launch price as today’s price.
Choose the Moto G Power 5G (2026) for battery and value
PhoneArena’s 2026 reviewer highlights the Moto G Power’s 1080p display, 8 GB RAM, 30 W charging and ruggedness ratings. Those characteristics may suit buyers who prioritize battery/value framing and a more robust-feeling device over a more vivid display or longer software support. The same review notes that the LCD looks less vivid beside Samsung’s AMOLED and describes a two-year OS update window, compared with Samsung’s six-year promise.

When a Samsung A37 or A57 is worth the step up
Samsung announced US launch prices of $449.99 for the Galaxy A37 5G and $549.99 for the Galaxy A57 5G, with US availability beginning April 9, 2026. Samsung says both models receive up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and up to six years of security updates. Those prices put them above what many shoppers mean by budget, but they offer a relevant comparison if you can spend more. The “up to” qualification matters: do not assume every regional version has identical terms without checking its listing.
TechRadar reviewer Tom Bedford described the A57’s display and slim body positively, while judging its cameras and processor adequate rather than impressive for everyday use. That is a reviewer’s assessment, not an objective performance result. It suggests the A57 may suit routine use, but does not establish that it is a better value than a cheaper phone for your needs.

How to choose the right everyday 5G phone
Set a realistic total price
Compare the unlocked price with carrier offers, and include any activation requirements or plan costs attached to a promotion. The Galaxy A17’s $199.99 is Samsung’s US starting-price listing accessed October 3, 2026, not a guaranteed live transaction price. The A37 and A57 figures are Samsung’s 2026 US launch prices, not necessarily current sale prices.
Prioritize the screen and camera you will use
A vivid display can make browsing and video more pleasant; the A17’s AMOLED is a key reason to consider it at the low-cost end. If photos are a higher priority, review current Pixel A-series camera coverage and sample images before choosing. Camera megapixel counts alone do not establish which phone takes better everyday pictures.

Separate battery capacity from battery life
A battery’s mAh figure is a capacity specification, while actual runtime depends on software, network conditions, brightness and use. Prefer battery observations tied to a named reviewer and model over promises inferred from capacity. Charging speed is a separate consideration: PhoneArena lists 30 W charging for the Moto G Power 5G (2026).
Check storage and expansion
The A17 listing includes 128 GB and storage expansion. Confirm whether the exact version sold by your retailer supports the expansion you need, and whether its included storage is enough for apps, photos and offline media.
Read the update promise precisely
Samsung’s A-series page says six years of security and software updates. Its 2026 announcement is more specific for the A37 and A57: up to six Android OS and One UI upgrade generations and up to six years of security updates. Do not silently transfer a model-specific commitment to another model or regional variant. The Moto G Power’s two-year OS update window, as described by PhoneArena, is a shorter stated support period. Update promises are not the same as a guarantee that every feature arrives on every model at the same time.
Verify 5G and carrier compatibility before ordering
An unlocked phone gives you the option to choose a carrier or plan; it does not prove that every model variant works on every carrier. Google advises that buyers verify the exact model number, supported 5G bands and carrier activation policy. For reference, Google’s US Pixel 9a specifications identify a 5G Sub-6 model and supported bands, but those specifications should not be applied to a different model or variant. Ask the carrier to confirm compatibility before purchase, especially when buying a phone not sold directly by that carrier.
