The captain leads from the field as a player; the coach directs the team’s technical work and player development. Neither can overrule the referee, and the captain has no special legal authority over teammates. Their influence differs: the captain leads peers during play, while the coach works with the team from the technical area and in training.
What is the captain’s role in soccer?
Under IFAB’s Laws of the Game 2025/26, Law 3, each team must have an identifiable captain on the field, wearing an armband. The captain remains a player—not a manager or an assistant referee.
IFAB states: “The team captain has no special status or privileges but has a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team.” That responsibility is a formal baseline, not a detailed job description. In practice, captains often set an example, encourage teammates and help communication between players and staff. How much influence they have depends on the player and the team’s culture.
What is the coach’s role?
The coach is a team official who guides the team’s technical work and player development. This includes preparing players and helping shape how the team plays. FIFA’s coach-development resources, including its FIFA Training Centre, support coaches with training sessions and tactical analysis.

A coach’s position gives them a role in directing coaching work, not in controlling match decisions. Coaches and other team officials remain subject to the Laws and must behave responsibly. The referee can take action against team officials who fail to do so, as set out in IFAB Law 5.
Captain vs. coach: the practical differences
| Area | Captain | Coach |
|---|---|---|
| Status | Player on the field, identified by an armband. | Team official, subject to rules for officials and the technical area. |
| Main contribution | Peer leadership and responsibility for team behaviour; often helps connect players and staff. | Guides technical work and player development. |
| Authority | No special status or privileges under the Laws and no power to replace the referee. | Directs coaching work, but cannot control refereeing decisions. |
| Where the role is exercised | On the field as a player. | Through coaching, including work with the team from the technical area and in training. |
Can the captain approach the referee?
Do not assume the captain can freely argue with the referee or speak on behalf of the team in every situation. IFAB’s ‘Only the captain’ guidelines were approved for inclusion in the 2025/26 Laws, effective 1 July 2025. Competitions can choose whether to apply the guidance in specified situations, so the applicable competition rules matter. It does not give the captain authority over the referee or make the coach the on-field representative under the captain provisions.

The referee has full authority to enforce the Laws during the match. IFAB’s rules on referee authority and team officials are set out in Law 5.
