Cyberpunk 2077 is the most direct next step if you want another story-led open-world RPG from CD Projekt Red—but it trades The Witcher’s dark fantasy for science fiction. For a different kind of follow-up, choose based on what you miss most: a richly inhabited world, challenging exploration, flexible role-playing, monster fights, or freeform fantasy roaming.
No single game reproduces every part of The Witcher 3. These recommendations are matches for particular qualities, not a ranking of equivalent replacements.

Start with Cyberpunk 2077 for another CD Projekt Red open world
CD Projekt Red describes Cyberpunk 2077 as an open-world role-playing game about V in a dangerous future city. The shared developer, quest design, and worldbuilding make it the clearest studio-to-studio bridge from The Witcher 3, according to GamesRadar’s recommendations. The biggest shift is its setting: expect science fiction rather than monsters, magic, and medieval fantasy. See the official Cyberpunk 2077 page for the game’s description.
Choose it if you want another authored, story-led open world and are comfortable leaving the Northern Kingdoms behind. The Witcher 3 itself is presented by CD Projekt Red as a dark-fantasy open-world RPG in which Geralt searches for Ciri; its official page also identifies Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine as expansions. Check platform and edition details before assuming a remastered version or expansion is included: ownership entitlements differ. The Witcher 3 official page.
#1 Best Overall
- Trained from early childhood and mutated to gain superhuman skills, strength, and reflexes, witchers are a counterbalance to the monster-infested world in which they live.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth, and complexity.
- Take on the most important contract of your life: to track down the child of prophecy, the key to saving or destroying this world.
Pick by the part of The Witcher 3 you want more of
| If you want… | Try… | The main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| A lived-in world and emotional story | Red Dead Redemption 2 | It leaves fantasy and sword combat behind. |
| Exploration with demanding real-time combat | Elden Ring | It is harder and has less NPC interaction. |
| Quest flexibility and role-playing choices | Baldur’s Gate 3 | It is party-based and turn-based, not real-time action. |
| Fantasy monster fights and varied loadouts | Dragon’s Dogma 2 | It is a combat-focused match rather than the closest narrative one. |
| Open-ended fantasy roaming | The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim | You create your own protagonist and follow a different quest structure. |
| Monster hunting and cooperative progression | Monster Hunter: World | It is a narrower match, not an open-world narrative RPG substitute. |
For a character-led world: Red Dead Redemption 2
Red Dead Redemption 2 suits players who remember The Witcher 3 most for its world, interactions, emotional storytelling, and memorable characters. GamesRadar highlights those strengths while noting the departure from melee combat. It is a strong choice when atmosphere and narrative matter more than fantasy creatures or swordplay.
For exploration and a combat challenge: Elden Ring
Elden Ring is an action RPG built around a large world and demanding fights. GamesRadar notes that it offers less NPC interaction than The Witcher 3, so do not expect the same density of dialogue and character-led quests. Choose it if discovery and a tougher combat-first experience appeal more than a closely guided story. The official Elden Ring page covers the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree expansion.
For flexible quests and party role-playing: Baldur’s Gate 3
Baldur’s Gate 3 is the pick for players who want varied ways to approach quests and extensive interaction with non-player characters. Its party-based role-playing and turn-based battles are a substantial change from controlling Geralt in real-time combat, but the shift makes room for a different kind of tactical choice. GamesRadar highlights its quest flexibility and NPC interaction.
For fantasy monster battles: Dragon’s Dogma 2
Dragon’s Dogma 2 puts the emphasis on large monster encounters, different loadouts, and climbing enemies during fights. GamesRadar describes its world as smaller than The Witcher 3’s but rich in content. Treat it as a choice for action and monster encounters rather than for a comparable narrative or side-quest experience.

For freeform fantasy exploration: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim offers magical-world exploration, secrets, monsters, and alchemy. Its player-created protagonist and open-ended quest structure differ from Geralt’s authored story, which is precisely why it works for someone who wants room to roam and shape a character rather than follow another fixed lead.
For cooperative monster hunting: Monster Hunter: World
If the contracts and creature tracking were your favorite part of The Witcher 3, Monster Hunter: World focuses more directly on hunting monsters, with cooperative play and progression. GamesRadar recommends it for that interest. It does not offer the same broad open-world narrative-RPG experience, so choose it for the hunt rather than as an all-purpose replacement.

Combat format is one of the clearest differences among these games. Bandai Namco Europe explains: “Action RPG games put reflexes and real-time combat at the centre of the experience.” Its RPG genre explainer contrasts that with turn-based RPGs, where players plan during pauses.
- Want real-time action? Consider Cyberpunk 2077, Elden Ring, or Dragon’s Dogma 2; their settings, difficulty, and narrative emphasis differ.
- Open to turn-based battles? Try Baldur’s Gate 3 for party tactics and flexible quest approaches.
- Want a different kind of combat loop? Monster Hunter: World centers the experience on hunting and progression, including cooperative play.
Check platform and edition before you buy
Availability and compatibility can vary by platform, region, and edition. Check the game’s official store or publisher listing for your platform before purchasing, and confirm separately whether an expansion or upgraded edition is part of the version you intend to buy. A recommendation here is about the kind of experience to expect, not a guarantee that a particular edition is available on every system.
