What does Rare mean on Xbox achievements?
In Microsoft’s GDK documentation, achievement rarity describes how commonly players unlock an achievement. The XblAchievementRarityCategory page lists three enum values: Unset, Rare, and Common. It describes Rare as an unlock rate of 0–10.9% and Common as 11.0–100.0%.
A separate Microsoft page gives a different cutoff. The XblAchievementUnlockEvent documentation describes Rare as a rarityPercentage of 9% or less, and Common otherwise. It says that percentage is based on the number of users who unlocked the achievement divided by the unique users of that title. The two pages were last updated November 6, 2025, but their thresholds do not match; Microsoft does not reconcile them in those descriptions.
For that reason, the documented labels are clear, but there is no single cutoff that these two Microsoft pages consistently establish. Treat the displayed unlock percentage as the useful measure for a specific achievement rather than assuming a universal boundary.

Are Epic and Legendary official Xbox rarity tiers?
The reviewed Microsoft GDK rarity enum contains no Epic or Legendary values. That supports saying they are not categories in this documented Xbox enum; it does not establish that those words never appear in any game or other Xbox-related context.
What is a Mythic achievement?
Mythic is not another unlock-prevalence band like Rare or Common. In an Xbox Wire announcement published September 29, 2026, Xbox described Mythic Achievement as a completion award: completing all original achievements for a game earns the status. Achievements added later through DLC or updates do not count toward the requirement, and earned status remains yours.

The announcement said the feature was beginning to roll out to Xbox Insiders. It also said eligible games that players had already completed—including Xbox 360 titles—had received Mythic status. That announcement does not establish general public availability beyond the Insider rollout described at the time.
How Xbox rarity differs from TrueAchievements scoring
TrueAchievements has its own rarity-adjusted score and achievement statistics. That system is distinct from Microsoft’s GDK Rare/Common category: Xbox’s documented rarity concerns an achievement’s unlock prevalence, while TrueAchievements’ TA Ratio contributes to its own score and comparisons across achievements, games, and players.

Xbox Wire’s 2014 interview with TrueAchievements CEO Rich Stone discussed the service’s ratios, guides, statistics, and gaming sessions. A separate Xbox Wire article from 2016 provides historical context for Xbox rarity integration. Those older articles describe a third-party service and its history, not a definition of Microsoft’s current GDK enum.
How to interpret a rarity label or score
- If you see an Xbox achievement’s unlock percentage, read it as an indication of how many players of that title unlocked it; Microsoft’s two GDK pages differ on the precise Rare cutoff.
- If you see a TA Ratio or a rarity-adjusted score, identify it as TrueAchievements’ scoring rather than an official Xbox rarity tier.
- If you see Mythic, read it as recognition for completing a game’s original achievement list, not as a percentage-based rarity label.

What is a Mythic achievement?
It is Xbox’s completion award for earning all of a game’s original achievements. The 2026 announcement says later DLC or update achievements are not required.
