A soccer captain represents the team on the field and has a degree of responsibility for teammates’ behaviour. The captain wears an identifying armband and should help ensure that players respect the Laws of the Game and the referee’s decisions. The role does not give the captain authority to enforce the rules or overrule the referee.
What the captain is responsible for
Identifying the team’s captain
Each team must have a captain on the field wearing an identifying armband. If the captain is substituted, another player on the field must wear it so the referee can identify the captain. The captain may also be changed during a match, provided the new captain wears the armband. The rules require an identifying armband, not a particular brand or design. IFAB Law 3; 2025/26 Law text.
Taking responsibility for team behaviour
IFAB Law 3.10 states: “The team captain has no special status or privileges but has a degree of responsibility for the behaviour of the team.” This is a responsibility to the team, not a disciplinary power over other players.
Encouraging respect for the Laws and officials
IFAB says players have a major responsibility for the image of the game and that the captain should help ensure the Laws and referees’ decisions are respected. In practice, that makes the captain a team representative who can support orderly communication and respect for officials, rather than a second referee. IFAB Notes on the Laws.

Can the captain speak to the referee?
There is no universal rule that only the captain may approach or speak to the referee. IFAB’s captain-only approach guidelines are optional for competitions. Where a competition adopts them, only the captain may approach the referee in the situations specified by that protocol; its scope depends on the competition’s rules.
IFAB approved updated guidelines on 1 March 2025 for inclusion in the 2025/26 Laws for competitions choosing to apply them. They took effect from 1 July 2025, with earlier implementation possible for competitions starting before that date and continuation of the trial protocol permitted for competitions already in the trial. Check the regulations for the competition in question rather than assuming the protocol applies everywhere. IFAB announcement on updated captain-only guidelines.

IFAB Law 5.1 says: “Each match is controlled by a referee who has full authority to enforce the Laws of the Game in connection with the match.” Decisions on facts connected with play are final, and decisions by the referee and other match officials must be respected. The general baseline in IFAB’s 2025/26 Law text is that the captain wears an identifying armband, has no special status or privileges, and has a degree of responsibility for team behaviour. IFAB lists a 2026/27 edition, but the detailed captain wording in that edition is not established here. For a match, consult the edition and competition regulations that apply to that competition, especially before relying on a captain-only approach protocol. IFAB Laws of the Game editions.
