Use up or remove as much product as you reasonably can, then separate the packaging and follow your local recycling service’s rules for each piece. A recycling symbol does not guarantee acceptance: bottles, jars, pumps, caps, sleeves and other small parts may have different destinations. Set aside items your curbside program rejects and check current brand or retailer take-back options before mailing anything.
Empty the product before sorting the package
Use the product until it is empty when practical. If you cannot use the remainder, remove as much as you reasonably can. Do not ship a container that is dripping or partly full unless a program’s current rules explicitly allow it.
Preparation rules depend on the route. TerraCycle says washing is not necessary for its general collection process. For its paid Canadian Beauty Products and Packaging Zero Waste Box, however, packages must not be dripping, excess product must be removed, and any packages you rinse must be completely dry before shipping. Follow the specific service’s instructions rather than treating one recycler’s guidance as a curbside rule.
Separate the parts and check local recycling rules
Beauty packaging can combine several materials and small components. Check your municipality’s current accepted-material list for the container body and for each removable part. Look specifically for instructions about rinsing, caps, pumps, labels and sleeves; local rules differ, and the recycling mark alone does not establish that an item is accepted.

- Separate removable components when your local service asks you to do so.
- Keep rejected components out of the curbside bin and set them aside for another route.
- Do not assume that a plastic bottle, pump, cap, tube or glass jar is accepted merely because another item made from the same material is collected.
A local example: Edinburgh
Edinburgh Council’s guidance accepts clean plastic bottles, pots, tubs and trays in its specified bins. It says labels can stay on, asks residents to remove a sleeve made from a different plastic, and asks them to remove pump sprays. The council also says it does not collect other types of plastic. Choose a route for packaging curbside recycling excludes
Small size, mixed materials, contamination and low material value can make beauty packaging costly for local recyclers to handle, according to TerraCycle’s 2023 report. If your local service excludes an item, look for a current take-back program rather than putting it in the bin on the assumption that it will be sorted out.

TerraCycle describes free sponsored programs, retailer or drop-off options, and paid services. Terms and availability are program-specific, so confirm that the particular brand or location is participating before collecting a box of packaging or making a trip.
Check the item list before mailing
TerraCycle’s Canadian Beauty Products and Packaging Zero Waste Box page lists eligible examples including complex closures, multilayered packaging, glass and plastic dispensers, and shampoo bottles. It excludes, among other items, aerosols, perfume bottles, nail-polish bottles, and full or partly full packaging. Check the Canadian Beauty Products and Packaging Zero Waste Box terms for the current item list and shipping requirements before using it. This paid Canadian service is not evidence of availability in other countries.

A Shoppers Drug Mart announcement dated March 25, 2024 described a TerraCycle mail-in program for Quo Beauty cosmetics in Canada. At launch, its examples included plastic and glass tubes, pots, pumps, sprays and jars, as well as lipstick, mascara, eyeliner, eyeshadow, foundation, powder and concealer components. It excluded nail-polish and nail-polish-remover bottles, wipes, sponges, brushes and pressurized cans. Treat this as a dated launch example, not confirmation that enrollment remains open: check the program announcement and current terms before relying on it.

What TerraCycle’s reported figures do—and do not—show
TerraCycle reports that its programs recycled 1,422,848 lb of hard-to-recycle personal-care and beauty packaging waste in 2023. Its 2023 report says over 98% of personal-care and beauty waste collected through its programs is recycled through its specialized process, with 1.7% sent to waste-to-energy. These are company-reported figures for its collected material and process, not a claim about all beauty packaging or all recycling systems.
In an audit of collected personal-care and beauty waste, TerraCycle reported a material breakdown of 46% floating plastics, 47% sinking plastics, 3% metal, 2% glass and 2% mixed flexible plastic. The categories are TerraCycle’s reported audit output, not a universal profile of beauty packaging. Its lifecycle analysis also reports average results across eight impact categories that were 74% better than landfills and 67% better than waste-to-energy. That is TerraCycle’s comparison of its own beauty-waste process, not a general comparison of recycling routes. See TerraCycle’s beauty report.
