Temple describes BrainFlow as a proxy for cerebral blood flow, not a direct measurement of brain function or a clinical reading. Temple reports encouraging correlations with two research reference methods under specific study conditions, but those figures do not show how close an individual user’s readings are or establish that the device is clinically interchangeable with those methods. Temple describes the product as worn at the temple, not as a finger-worn ring.
What the Temple wearable measures
Temple calls its metric BrainFlow and describes it as “a proxy for Cerebral Blood Flow.” Cerebral blood flow (CBF) means blood flowing through the brain. A proxy is an estimate related to that phenomenon; it is not the same as directly measuring CBF. Temple’s product page describes the device as worn at the temple, so “smart ring” can be misleading if it suggests a conventional finger-worn ring.
The distinction matters: BrainFlow should not be read as a direct measure of brain function, a diagnosis, or a clinical assessment. Temple’s published comparisons evaluate how BrainFlow relates to particular research measurements under particular conditions.
What Temple’s accuracy evidence shows
Temple’s science and research page summarizes two comparisons involving BrainFlow. Both report correlations with reference measurements. Correlation describes how measurements vary together; it does not say how far apart their absolute readings are.

Temple’s science page attributes the first comparison to Gulati D et al. and the second to Kumar A et al.; it does not state publication years in the summaries. The reported statistics are correlations, not an accuracy percentage.
What the reported correlations do not establish
An r value such as 0.91 is not “91% accurate.” A high correlation can show that two measures move together while leaving unanswered whether their readings agree closely for each person. The Temple summaries do not provide individual-level error bounds, a consumer accuracy percentage, a diagnostic threshold, or evidence that BrainFlow can substitute for professional measurements.

The participant and task details also limit how broadly to apply the results. One comparison involved 23 healthy adults, and both summaries describe specific activities or physiological challenges. The evidence presented on Temple’s page does not establish performance across broad demographic groups or every real-world use condition.
Medical-use limits and practical interpretation
Temple’s Terms of Use state: “The Temple Device and Services are not medical devices and are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition or illness.” The terms also say the data are not intended to match professional medical or scientific measurement devices, and advise users not to treat the service as medical advice or a substitute for professional judgment.

For a user, the sensible interpretation is to treat BrainFlow as a wellness-oriented proxy whose changes may be informative in the specific context Temple describes—not as proof that cerebral blood flow is normal or abnormal. Do not use it to make a diagnosis, change treatment, or delay care. Seek professional advice for health concerns.
