Before you buy a game, check the rating on the exact product listing or box, then confirm it in the official rating database used in your market. Read the age category, content descriptors and notices about online features or spending separately: they answer different questions, and the age symbol alone is not a full content summary.

How do I check a game’s age rating before buying?

  1. Match the exact product. Confirm the game title, platform and edition on the item you plan to buy. A rating image for another platform or edition may not describe the version in your cart.
  2. Check the retailer listing or physical box. Ratings are commonly shown on game packaging and digital storefronts. ESRB explains where its ratings appear in its ratings location guide.
  3. Verify the title with the rating authority for your market. For ESRB-rated releases, use the ESRB lookup options; for PEGI markets, search the PEGI game database. Rating categories and symbols are regional, so use the system shown for the release where you are shopping.
  4. Read the details, not just the symbol. Check the age category, content descriptors, and any notices about online interaction or purchases. If you need more context, look for an ESRB rating summary or PEGI consumer advice.
  5. Check relevant add-ons. Look up the edition or downloadable content (DLC) separately if you are buying it; ESRB says DLC may receive a different rating when its content exceeds that of the core game.

Retailer pages and packaging are convenient first checks; official title databases provide a second check and may offer more explanation. If a listing is missing details or the version is unclear, verify the precise release rather than relying on a rating for a similarly named game.

What do the age category and content descriptors mean?

The age category is a guide to age suitability under that rating system. Content descriptors identify content that contributed to the rating or may be relevant to a buyer. They are not a complete inventory of everything in a game, and the age category does not explain the context behind each descriptor. ESRB explains this distinction in its guide to selecting appropriate video games.

When a symbol or short descriptor leaves a question unanswered, use the title-level explanation if one is available. ESRB rating summaries provide additional context for many physical games, and PEGI entries may include consumer advice and specific content explanations. Availability varies by listing and release type.

Does a game’s rating tell me about online play or in-game purchases?

Not by itself. ESRB interactive-feature notices can flag features such as in-game purchases, random items, user interaction, location sharing or unrestricted internet. ESRB says these notices describe features and do not affect its age-rating assignment. Check them separately if online contact, privacy or spending matters to your household; the ESRB family gaming guide explains the labels.

Why might the physical and digital versions have different details?

ESRB describes separate rating processes for physical and digital games. For physical games, publishers submit questionnaires and gameplay footage; at least three trained raters review the footage and recommend a category, descriptors and interactive elements. For digital games rated through IARC, developers complete a questionnaire that assigns rating components, and ESRB monitors assignments and can correct inaccurate ones. These are ESRB-specific processes, not a description of every rating authority. ESRB notes that IARC-rated digital games do not have ESRB Rating Summaries. See its rating process explanation.

Because the details can depend on release type, check the specific product you are purchasing. Also verify DLC separately when relevant: an add-on may carry a different rating from the base game.

What if I’m still unsure whether the game is suitable?

Use the rating as one decision aid, not as a substitute for your own judgment about the player and your household. ESRB suggests considering reviews, watching gameplay and the individual child alongside the rating. Its guide puts it this way: “ESRB ratings are just one factor for determining whether it’s appropriate for your child to play a certain game, though many parents say the ESRB ratings are the most helpful factor in finding appropriate video games.” Read the full guide.
