Start by identifying what is making the noise, then address that source without compromising cooling. A compatible fan change may help when small, fast chassis fans are the main culprit; persistent noise may call for a purpose-built acoustic enclosure or baffled ventilation. After any change, check temperatures under representative workload and keep every component within its manufacturer’s operating limits.
Find the noise source before changing anything
Listen near the rack and note when the noise changes—for example, during startup, disk activity, or heavier workloads. Common sources include high-speed chassis fans, drive vibration, a power supply, and sound escaping through the rack. Establish a baseline at the place where the noise matters, and change one thing at a time so you can tell what helped.
- Fan whine or rushing air: Check whether it comes from the server chassis, power supply, or rack ventilation.
- Rattle or hum: Check for drive vibration or vibration transmitted between equipment and the rack.
- Noise that persists outside the cabinet: The rack may be allowing equipment noise to escape even if the equipment itself is functioning normally.
Do not assume a standard PC case-fan solution will work in an enterprise server. Before replacing a fan, verify the exact device’s fan dimensions, connector, PWM support, airflow direction, static-pressure needs, and fan-control behavior. A mismatch can cause poor cooling or trigger a fault.
Consider a compatible fan change or control adjustment
If the chassis supports standard 120 mm PWM fans, a compatible quieter fan configuration may be worth considering. Fan-control adjustments may also reduce noise when the equipment supports them. Both approaches involve a cooling trade-off: slower fans can mean less cooling, and an incompatible replacement can behave unpredictably. Check temperatures under representative workload after any change, and compare them with the limits specified by the equipment manufacturer.

A scoped 120 mm fan example: 45HomeLab HL15
Noctua describes replacing all six stock 120 mm fans in a 45HomeLab HL15 with six NF-A12x25 PWM fans, using NA-IS1 inlet spacers on the front fans. For that HL15 configuration, Noctua reports approximately 4–6 dB(A) lower noise at the same RPM. In its cited full-speed comparison, the Noctua fans ran around 3 dB(A) quieter while producing around 20% more airflow through that chassis. When is an acoustic rack enclosure worth considering?
A purpose-built acoustic enclosure may help when replacing or adjusting fans is not suitable, or when noise escapes through the rack. Treat it as a ventilation product as well as a sound-control product: compare heat rejection with your equipment’s heat load, and check rack capacity, mounting depth, equipment dimensions, electrical setup, space, and purchase availability for your location.

Schneider Electric lists 18.5 dB(A) of noise reduction for its APC NetShelter Soundproof range. Its listed 12U model specifies thermostat-controlled fans that reject 1.2 kW of heat; the listed 38U model specifies 3.6 kW. Could baffled roof ventilation solve the problem?
A baffled roof tray can route exhaust through a designed path rather than letting it exit directly. Acousti Products describes a tray with six 120 mm fans, soft anti-vibration gaskets, and a baffle that directs exhaust along the roof. The company reports approximately 40 dBA measured one metre from the cabinet front and about 400 CFM cumulative installed airflow for that arrangement. Those are manufacturer figures; actual fit and performance depend on the rack and setup. Choose an approach that preserves cooling

Verify temperatures after every change
- Make one change at a time, following the equipment manufacturer’s installation and configuration guidance.
- Run the system under a workload representative of normal use while monitoring component temperatures.
- Compare readings with the manufacturer’s specified operating limits. If a component exceeds its limit, revert the change or restore adequate cooling before continuing.
