Xbox One plays select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games, while Xbox Series X|S plays Xbox One games plus select Xbox 360 and original Xbox games. Older-generation support is not universal: check the exact game in Xbox’s backward-compatible catalog before buying a game or console. Digital games you own can be installed from your library; supported disc games require a disc drive, and the disc must remain in the drive to play.

Which Xbox generations work on each console?

Console Games it supports through backward compatibility Important limit
Xbox One Xbox 360 and original Xbox games listed in the catalog Support is selective; a game’s generation alone does not establish compatibility.
Xbox Series X Xbox One games, plus Xbox 360 and original Xbox games listed in the catalog Older-generation support is selective. Individual enhancements also vary by title.
Xbox Series S Digital Xbox One games, plus digital Xbox 360 and original Xbox games listed in the catalog Series S has no disc drive, so it cannot play physical copies.

These compatibility rules mean an Xbox One game generally carries forward to Series X|S, but they do not mean every Xbox 360 or original Xbox game runs on every newer console. Use the official catalog to confirm a specific title.

How to install and play a compatible game

Digital games

If you own a digital game and it appears in the backward-compatible catalog, Xbox says it will be available in the console’s Ready to Install area. Install it from there and launch it as you would another installed game.

Physical discs

  1. Check that the exact disc game is supported and that your console has a disc drive.
  2. Insert the disc. The console downloads and installs the game to its storage.
  3. Leave the disc in the drive whenever you play; it remains the proof of ownership.

Series X has a disc drive; Series S is digital-only. A disc from a supported title therefore cannot be used on Series S, even if the game is in the catalog. See Xbox’s disc and digital-game guidance.

Backward compatibility, game enhancements, and Smart Delivery are different

Backward compatibility lets a supported older game run

On Series X, Xbox says backward-compatible games run natively on the console hardware, using its CPU, GPU, and SSD. Newer hardware can contribute to steadier or higher frame rates and shorter loading, but the result depends on the game. Xbox’s technical explanation is available in Xbox Wire’s May 2020 overview.

Enhancements vary by title

  • Auto HDR: Adds HDR rendering to eligible older games originally designed for standard dynamic range (SDR). Xbox says the feature is designed to preserve the game’s artistic intent.
  • FPS Boost: Raises frame rates in select games. Xbox says its approach can effectively double a game’s frame rate in some cases, but it is not suitable for every title because game physics or animation can be affected.
  • Resolution improvements: Apply to selected titles, not the entire compatible catalog. Xbox’s October 2020 explanation described the Heutchy method bringing selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games to 4K on Xbox One X, and to 1440p on Series S or 4K on Series X.

Xbox’s feature explanations and qualifications are in its October 2020 Xbox Wire article and its backward-compatibility testing and enhancement update. Check the game’s own support details rather than assuming it receives every enhancement.

Smart Delivery provides the supported version for your console

Smart Delivery is a feature for games that support it: the game detects whether it is running on Xbox One, Series X, or Series S and provides the best available version for that device. For a title with an optimized version, Xbox says Smart Delivery can provide that version at no additional cost. It is not another name for backward compatibility, and it does not apply automatically to every game. See Xbox’s Smart Delivery explanation.

What to know about original Xbox games

Compatible original Xbox titles run as the original games, not as remasters. Some local or offline features may still work if the original game supported them, including offline co-op, local multiplayer, or system-link. Original Xbox Live online multiplayer and in-game marketplaces are unavailable through backward compatibility, and original Xbox games do not gain Xbox achievements.

What changes between Series X and Series S?

For a physical collection, the key difference is straightforward: Series X has a disc drive and Series S does not. Both consoles support digital backward-compatible games when the titles are in the catalog. Compare the exact games you own, whether each copy is digital or on disc, and which enhancements the particular game supports.

Rank #4
Xbox Series S | Digital Gaming Console | 512GB SSD

  • QUICK RESUME — Seamlessly switch between multiple games and resume exactly where you left off. No more waiting through title screens and loading bars.
  • FOUR GENERATIONS OF DIGITAL GAMES — Play thousands of digital games from XBOX Series X|S, XBOX One, XBOX 360, and Original XBOX with backward compatibility. Many titles are enhanced for better visuals and performance. Smart Delivery ensures you always get the best version for your console.

There is also a difference in the technical baseline Xbox described in 2020: Series S backward-compatible games use the Xbox One S version, with enhancements such as texture filtering, more consistent frame rates, faster loading, and Auto HDR. Series X runs compatible games using its full hardware. These are platform-level descriptions, not a guarantee that every title receives the same visible improvement; check current, game-specific support.

How to verify a game before you buy or switch consoles

  1. Search the exact title in Xbox’s backward-compatible catalog.
  2. Confirm which console generation and version the listing supports; do not infer support from the game’s original release generation.
  3. Check whether your copy is digital or on disc. A disc requires a console with a drive and must stay inserted during play.
  4. Look up the title’s individual support for Auto HDR, FPS Boost, resolution improvements, or Smart Delivery. These are not universal features.

Xbox Wire reported in May 2020 that more than 500 Xbox 360 games had been brought to Xbox One, and that more than 100,000 hours of Series X play testing had been completed at that time. Its October 2020 article reported more than 500,000 hours of gameplay across the backward-compatibility catalog as testing planned to be complete by the Series X|S launch. Those are Xbox’s historical reports, not current catalog totals or independent measurements: May 2020 and October 2020.
