If Google Classroom or Drive is failing on an iPad, first check the internet connection, the account selected in each app, and whether the apps and iPadOS are up to date. Those checks separate common connection, account, and compatibility problems from file permissions, school-admin restrictions, and offline setup.
Start with three quick checks
1. Confirm the iPad is online
Open a webpage or another internet-dependent app. Classroom sign-in requires an active internet connection. If other services also fail, reconnect to Wi-Fi or resolve the iPad’s network connection before troubleshooting Classroom or Drive.
2. Check the selected Google account
In both Classroom and Drive, check the profile or account menu and confirm that the app is using the account intended for the class or shared file. A personal, school, or organization account may be appropriate depending on the learning setting. A file shared with one account may not open when you are signed in with another.
3. Update the apps and check iPadOS support
Update Google Classroom, Google Drive, and any editor you use—Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides—from the App Store. Google’s Classroom installation help page says iOS 11 or later is required for the latest Classroom app, and says Docs, Sheets, and Slides are needed for all Classroom features: Google Classroom installation help.

That Classroom minimum is not a guarantee that every Google app will still be supported on an iPad running iOS 11. Google’s current Drive support page says Drive, Docs, Sheets, and Slides receive updates for the three most recent major iOS versions and for Google Workspace app versions released within the past two years: Google Drive system requirements. If an app cannot be updated or stops receiving updates, check the iPad’s iOS version and whether it falls within that current support policy.
If Classroom will not let you sign in
“You can’t use Classroom with this account”
Verify that the selected account is the one your school or organization expects you to use. If you are unsure, ask the teacher or school which account should be enrolled in the class; switching between personal and school accounts can resolve an account mismatch.

“This service has been disabled by your admin”
This message indicates that Classroom is disabled for the school account. A student cannot enable the service in the app; contact the school’s administrator to ask them to activate Classroom. The same applies when the iPad is school-managed and an organization policy may control app or account access. If a file will not open or you cannot edit it
“You need access” means sharing permission is missing
First check that the file is opening under the same Google account to which its owner granted access. If it is the correct account and the message remains, request access from the file owner or ask them to share the file with that account. Google describes this error and the access-request process in its file and folder sharing help.

Opening and editing require different permission levels
A file may open successfully but still prevent changes because your role does not allow editing. Viewer access allows viewing; Commenter access allows comments and suggestions where supported; Editor access permits changes. Ask the owner for the permission level needed for your task. Do not assume a file is broken just because editing controls are unavailable.
If you cannot find a class Drive folder
Students can locate class folders from the Classroom app. Open Classroom, tap the menu, then tap Classroom folders. The folder may contain class materials stored in Drive, but access still depends on being signed in to the right account and having permission to the files. Set up files for offline work before losing internet
Offline access has to be prepared while the iPad is connected. It does not automatically make every Classroom attachment or Drive file available without a connection.
Save Classroom materials offline
In Classroom, open the relevant attachment and choose Available offline, or open an assignment and use Save all files offline when that option is available. These actions save the selected content for offline access; they do not grant access to files you are not permitted to open. Follow Google’s Classroom offline access instructions.

Make Drive documents available offline
In Drive, mark the relevant Docs, Sheets, or Slides file as Available offline while online. To edit those document types without a connection, use the matching Google Docs, Sheets, or Slides app. Google’s Drive offline instructions describe this setup.
Check storage before you go offline
Make sure the iPad has enough available storage for the files you want to keep offline. If storage is tight, remove unneeded local files or save only the class materials you will need. After the connection is lost, files that were not prepared in advance may not be available.
