Choose based on the software and work you need to do, not which device has the faster-sounding processor. A laptop is generally the safer choice for desktop applications, long typing sessions, complex file management, and several resizable windows. A tablet makes more sense when touch, handwriting, drawing, or comfortable use without a keyboard matters most. If you need both modes, consider a Windows detachable—but check the exact model’s processor and compatibility with your apps and peripherals.

Start with the apps and operating system you need

Before comparing screens or performance, list the applications, services, files, and accessories your work depends on. Check that each works on the exact device you are considering. An iPad Pro runs iPadOS, while the Surface Pro 11th Edition is a Windows device; they are not interchangeable just because both can be used with a keyboard.

For each essential task, ask:

  • Is the specific app available on this operating system, and does it include the features I rely on?
  • Can I open, edit, organize, and share the file types my workflow uses?
  • Will my required peripherals and services work with this model?
  • Can I complete the task comfortably on the device itself, or does it depend on a keyboard, mouse, or external display?

If you can name a desktop app or workflow that the tablet cannot handle, choose a compatible laptop or Windows detachable rather than hoping for a workaround.

Match the device to how you work

Choose a laptop for sustained keyboard and desktop work

A laptop is usually the more straightforward fit when most of your day involves typing, using desktop software, moving among files, or arranging multiple resizable windows. Its fixed keyboard-and-screen setup avoids relying on a separate keyboard for routine work. Confirm that the laptop has the ports, storage, and connectivity your setup requires.

#1 Best Overall

Choose a tablet for touch, handwriting, and drawing

A tablet is compelling when you expect to read, take handwritten notes, draw, browse, watch media, or edit documents lightly—and want to use the device comfortably without a keyboard. Touch-first interaction can be useful in ways a conventional laptop form factor does not prioritize. But tablet-first does not mean accessory-free: budget for the keyboard or stylus you actually need, and verify that each accessory supports the specific model and size.

For the iPad Pro 11-inch (M5), Apple lists compatibility with Apple Pencil Pro and Apple Pencil (USB-C) in its technical specifications. That establishes compatible Pencil options, not what comes in a particular retail box. Confirm the current listing and compatible keyboard before buying.

Consider a detachable if you need both modes

The Surface Pro 11th Edition is a Windows-based detachable: it can serve as a tablet and connect to a keyboard. Microsoft documents multiple processor variants and keyboard connection details on its Surface Pro features page and in its Snapdragon X Series specifications. Treat it as a distinct compromise, not proof that every tablet can replace a laptop: check the processor and confirm that your apps and peripherals work with the exact configuration.

Compare the complete setup, not just the device

A tablet’s price alone may not represent the cost of the setup you intend to use. Add the keyboard, stylus, storage, connectivity, and support you require, then compare that total with a laptop that already includes a keyboard. Prices, availability, accessory compatibility, and bundle contents can vary by model and market; verify them in the current regional listing. Current like-for-like total prices are not established here, so dated search-result prices should not be treated as current.

Read battery estimates in context

Battery-hour figures from different manufacturers are not a head-to-head result unless the devices were tested under comparable conditions. Apple lists up to 24 hours of video streaming and up to 16 hours of wireless web for the M5 MacBook Pro configuration shown on its technical specifications page. Microsoft lists up to 14 hours of local video playback for a specified Intel Core Ultra Series 2 Surface Pro for Business, 11th Edition configuration in its technical specifications. These are manufacturer estimates for different configurations and activities; they do not predict identical battery life in your workload.

Use this decision path

  1. Write down your essential apps and workflows. Eliminate devices that cannot handle a must-have task or peripheral.
  2. Identify your dominant mode of work. If it is desktop software and sustained typing, lean toward a laptop. If it is touch, notes, drawing, reading, or media, lean toward a tablet.
  3. Decide whether a detachable solves a real need. If you need both tablet and Windows laptop modes, assess a specific Surface Pro configuration and its compatibility rather than assuming all variants are equivalent.
  4. Price the setup you will actually use. Include required accessories, storage, connectivity, and support, using current prices for your market.
  5. Check the details that affect daily use. Compare screen size, keyboard comfort, ports, and battery estimates under the stated test activities.
