Neither recreates a data hall exactly; choose the fan for physical airflow and the speaker for adjustable, airflow-free ambience.
Why server rooms sound like fans
Fans are usually a major part of server noise. Dell says they are “generally the dominant source of noise in a server,” and describes airflow whoosh as broadband or white-noise-like. It also distinguishes that broad whoosh from tonal sounds associated with fan-blade passage. Dell Enterprise Acoustics
That makes fan noise a sensible starting point for a small ambience machine, but it is not a complete recipe for a data hall. Server sound varies by model, configuration, fan operation, and surroundings. A desk fan supplies airflow noise, not the particular mix of sounds made by a room full of equipment.
Choose a fan or a speaker

Build the physical fan version
What you need
- An adjustable USB desk fan with power suitable for your setup.
- A stable desk or shelf where the fan can sit securely.
- A USB power source compatible with the fan.
Set it up
- Place the fan on a secure, level surface with its airflow unobstructed.
- Connect it to a compatible power source, following the fan maker’s instructions.
- Start at a low setting, then adjust until the airflow and sound are comfortable for the room.
- If the sound is distracting, reduce the setting or move the fan farther away. Do not treat server-room specifications as a target for desk listening.
Expect general fan ambience rather than a faithful server-room sound. The fan creates real airflow, which playback cannot provide.
Build the speaker-playback version
What you need
- A compact powered speaker.
- A phone, computer, or other compatible playback source.
- A fan-like audio loop or recording you have permission to use.
Set it up
- Connect the speaker to your playback device using a supported connection.
- Choose a loop with a steady, broadband fan-like character, if that is the sound you want. This is a design choice, not a verified recipe for reproducing a data center.
- Enable repeat or loop playback in the audio player, if available.
- Begin at a low volume and adjust to a comfortable level. Keep playback moderate rather than trying to match server specifications.
Playback lets you shape the sound and set its level without adding airflow. The sources cited here do not identify a particular licensed data-center recording or verify an app for generating one.

Server noise figures are not desk-volume targets
Manufacturer figures illustrate why there is no single “data center” volume to copy. NVIDIA reports 98.7 dB acoustic power for each DGX H100 system at 80% fan PWM and 30 °C (86 °F), and says up to 106 dB per server is possible. These are product-specific acoustic-power figures, not sound-pressure readings at a listener’s location. NVIDIA sound mitigation guidance
Lenovo lists sound-pressure levels of 45–68 dBA across specified ThinkSystem SR630 V3 configurations. Lenovo cautions that room and installation factors affect the sound at a listener’s position. - Choose a desk fan if actual airflow matters and you want a simple, physical source of fan noise.
- Choose speaker playback if you want to control the sound character and level without creating airflow.
- Keep expectations modest if your goal is data-center ambience: neither option is established as a faithful recreation, and no universally safe listening level or tested build is established by these sources.
Homelab readers sometimes ask for “white noise machines,” as in this r/homelab discussion. A desk fan or speaker loop is a straightforward way to explore that sound, provided you treat it as ambience rather than a precise simulation.
