Those prices buy different scan areas and service packages; they are not a national average or an insurance-approved amount. Coverage depends chiefly on whether a clinician orders imaging to investigate a medical problem or someone seeks elective screening without symptoms.
What do full-body MRI providers charge?
“Full-body MRI” is not a standardized package in the examples below. Compare the anatomy scanned and services included—not just the headline price. These are provider-advertised U.S. prices checked October 3, 2026, and may change.

These figures are cash prices advertised by the providers, not a national price survey, negotiated insurance rates, or guaranteed patient bills. For conventional imaging, costs also vary with facility and equipment, staff, radiologist interpretation and reporting, location, and insurance. RadiologyInfo: MRI safety and cost factors
What should you compare before booking?
Ask for the scan’s exact regions and protocol, who interprets it, what report and clinician discussion are included, how findings are communicated, and whether follow-up or additional imaging costs extra. Check whether chest, lungs, heart, breasts, and extremities are included; the phrase “whole body” alone does not settle that.

For a diagnostic MRI, ask the ordering clinician and insurer for the procedure and diagnosis codes, whether prior authorization is needed, whether both the facility and interpreting clinician are in network, the allowed amount, your deductible and coinsurance status, and an estimate of your responsibility. For self-pay, request a written itemized quote specifying reporting, follow-up, and repeat imaging. Medicare advises patients to check whether certain advanced imaging services provided outside hospitals are accredited and to ask the provider what Medicare will cover. Medicare: diagnostic non-laboratory tests
When does insurance cover an MRI?
Diagnostic imaging ordered for a medical problem
Medicare Part B covers qualifying diagnostic non-laboratory tests, including MRI, when a provider orders them to find or treat a medical problem. For a covered test in a doctor’s office or independent diagnostic testing facility, a patient generally pays 20% of the Medicare-approved amount after meeting the Part B deductible. Hospital outpatient testing may also involve a copayment. The exact amount depends on factors such as other insurance, provider charges and assignment, facility type, and location. Elective screening when you have no symptoms
Medicare’s national MRI coverage policy says screening without signs, symptoms, complaints, or personal history of disease or injury is not covered unless specifically authorized by statute; it also discusses documenting medical necessity. CMS National Coverage Determination: Magnetic Resonance Imaging
A covered imaging technology does not automatically make an elective screening service covered. The American College of Radiology says it does not believe evidence is sufficient to recommend total-body screening for people without symptoms, risk factors, or family history suggestive of disease or serious injury. In its April 17, 2023, statement, the ACR wrote: “To date, there is no documented evidence that total body screening is cost-efficient or effective in prolonging life.” ACR statement, April 17, 2023

Commercial insurance
There is no single commercial-plan rule established here. Benefits, medical-necessity criteria, network status, prior authorization, billing codes, and exclusions vary by plan. Request a written coverage determination tied to the exact service, provider, and codes; a general claim that a scan is “covered” is not a reliable estimate of your bill. Out-of-network care may leave you paying a larger share or the full amount. RadiologyInfo: MRI safety and cost factors

The ACR warns that broad screening can reveal nonspecific abnormalities that lead to more tests or procedures, added expense, and no improvement in health. An incidental finding is not necessarily harmful, and this concern does not mean that an MRI ordered to investigate a specific clinical problem lacks value. The potential benefits and harms of screening an asymptomatic person are a separate question from diagnostic imaging. ACR statement, April 17, 2023
MRI uses strong magnetic fields and radiofrequency energy, not ionizing radiation. It still requires safety screening: the FDA emphasizes checking people and objects entering the MR environment and confirming that implanted devices are MR Safe or MR Conditional under the applicable conditions. The agency says, “Careful screening of people and objects entering the MR environment is critical to ensure nothing enters the magnet area that may become a projectile.” FDA: MRI benefits and risks
The FDA says millions of MRI scans are performed in the United States each year and it receives around 300 adverse-event reports for MRI scanners and coils annually. Those are reports—not a per-scan risk rate or proof that the scanner caused each event. FDA: MRI benefits and risks
