Choose a Chromebook if your schoolwork is mostly in a browser or Google tools and a suitable model fits your budget and school’s requirements. Choose the MacBook Neo if you need macOS apps, desktop-software compatibility, or useful integration with an iPhone and other Apple devices. There is no category-wide winner: Chromebook models vary widely, so compare a specific device and confirm school compatibility before buying.
What is the difference between a MacBook Neo and a Chromebook?
The MacBook Neo is one Apple laptop that runs macOS. A Chromebook is a category of laptops from multiple manufacturers that run ChromeOS. Google promotes Chromebooks for education, but that does not guarantee that a particular model will work with every school’s accounts, apps, exams, or management rules.
That difference matters when comparing price or hardware: Neo has a defined configuration, while Chromebook displays, keyboards, ports, performance, and capabilities vary by model. Treat “Chromebook” as a starting point, not a complete device specification.
How do their software and school compatibility compare?
MacBook Neo: macOS and Mac apps
Apple lists macOS Tahoe, built-in apps, iPhone integration, and compatibility with third-party apps for Neo. This makes it the more natural option when coursework requires macOS software or when a student already relies on Apple devices. Compatibility is not automatic, however: check each required course application, exam tool, and school account workflow before choosing it. Apple’s March 4, 2026 announcement describes the product and its software positioning.

Chromebook: ChromeOS and browser-first schoolwork
A Chromebook can suit assignments conducted in a browser or supported ChromeOS apps. Whether a particular model supports the apps and features a student needs depends on the device and its configuration. Confirm school account access, exam tools, and any required Android or Linux apps with the school or district; a school-managed device may be subject to its own rules. Google’s Chromebook education page is aimed at institutions choosing devices for students and educators, not a promise of compatibility with a specific school.
What do you get for the money?
Apple’s March 2026 U.S. announcement gave initial prices of $599 for the standard MacBook Neo and $499 for education. These are historical launch prices, not verified current offers; check the price and configuration available in your region. Chromebook prices have no single category-wide figure: compare the current price of the exact model against Neo rather than assuming every Chromebook costs less.

Apple’s announced Neo configuration includes a 13-inch display with 2408 × 1506 resolution, 500 nits brightness, and support for 1 billion colors; an A18 Pro chip with a six-core CPU and five-core GPU; and 8GB of unified memory. Apple identifies this as the base system for its product information and test notes. These specifications describe Neo, not a guarantee that it will suit every specialist workload. How long will each device receive software updates?
Google’s ChromeOS policy provides 10 years of updates from a device’s platform release, but that does not mean every Chromebook has 10 years of support remaining when it is purchased. Support dates are model-specific, and some older devices require an administrator to opt in to extended updates. Before buying a Chromebook, look up its automatic update date using Google’s Auto Update policy. For update steps and related guidance, see Google’s Chromebook operating-system update help.

Which one should a student choose?
Choose a Chromebook when the school workflow is browser-first
- Most assignments use a browser or school-approved Google tools.
- The school supports the specific model and its account, exam, and app requirements.
- A particular Chromebook’s current price meets the student’s budget.
- The model’s automatic update date leaves an acceptable support period.
Choose MacBook Neo when macOS or Apple integration matters
- A required course application needs macOS or a Mac desktop environment.
- The student benefits from using an iPhone or other Apple devices alongside the laptop.
- The school confirms that its accounts, exam tools, and IT policies support the device.
- The current local price works for the family’s budget.
Check the physical configuration, not just the operating system
Neo has two USB-C ports, and Apple specifies external-display connectivity on the USB 3 port only. If the student needs extra peripherals or display connections, confirm the port requirements before purchase; an adapter or hub may be useful only if those needs actually arise. Chromebooks differ by model, so compare the exact screen, keyboard, ports, convertible or touch features, and durability rather than assuming category-wide traits.

Does one device perform better for school?
There is no evidence here to support a universal student-performance or learning-outcome winner. Apple’s launch-page performance tests were conducted by Apple in January and February 2026 on preproduction Neo hardware and compared it with selected Windows laptops—not Chromebooks. Those results should not be read as a direct Neo-versus-Chromebook benchmark or as proof of better classroom outcomes.
