AMD’s cited official lineup does not list a Ryzen Z3 as of October 3, 2026. It lists Ryzen Z1 and Z2 processors. Intel’s handheld options also need exact names: Core Ultra 7 258V is a laptop chip used in handheld comparisons, while Intel has separately announced Arc G3 and G3 Extreme processors for handheld gaming. To compare gaming performance, start with the exact chip and its integrated graphics and power limits—but choose between complete handhelds, not chip names alone.
Which processors are actually in the comparison?
“Ryzen Z3” is not a listed model in AMD’s cited Ryzen Z-series lineup. That page lists Z1 and Z2 variants; this does not rule out a future or unlisted product, but there is no listed Z3 specification to compare. A useful current comparison therefore has to name a specific Ryzen Z chip and a specific Intel chip.
Intel’s Core Ultra comparison chart is for laptop processors, not a single family of handheld-specific chips. Intel has also announced Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme for handheld gaming, based on Core Ultra Series 3 architecture. The announcement establishes their handheld focus, but a chip announcement alone does not confirm the availability, configuration, or independent gaming performance of a particular device in your region.
One concrete comparison already tested in handhelds is AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme versus Intel Core Ultra 7 258V. Those are specific processors—not stand-ins for every Ryzen Z or Core Ultra chip.

Which specs matter most for handheld gaming?
For a gaming handheld, prioritize the integrated GPU and the power the device can sustain. Then check memory and the complete system. CPU core counts and boost clocks help describe the chip, but they do not predict a universal frame-rate winner.
| Chip | CPU specification | Integrated graphics | Configurable power |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen Z2 Extreme | Zen 5; 8 cores, 16 threads | RDNA 3.5; 16 graphics cores | 15–35 W |
| Ryzen Z2 | Zen 4; 8 cores, 16 threads | RDNA 3; 12 graphics cores | 15–30 W |
| Ryzen Z1 Extreme | Zen 4; 8 cores, 16 threads | RDNA 3; 12 graphics cores | 9–30 W |
| Core Ultra 7 258V | Not stated here; see Intel’s laptop comparison chart for its listed specifications. | Arc 140V, as identified in Intel’s chart | Not stated for a handheld configuration in the cited chart |
| Arc G3 and Arc G3 Extreme | Based on Core Ultra Series 3 architecture; further configuration details are not stated in Intel’s cited handheld announcement. | Handheld-gaming processors; graphics-unit details are not stated in the cited announcement | Not stated in the cited announcement |
AMD’s figures are from its official Ryzen Z lineup and Z2 Extreme product page, accessed October 3, 2026. Intel’s comparison chart is expressly for laptop processors; its specifications should not be treated as the power behavior of every handheld using one of those chips. The Arc G announcement was published in 2026.

Graphics-core and graphics-unit counts use vendor-specific definitions. For example, AMD’s 16 graphics cores and Intel’s Arc 140V label are not equivalent units that can be compared by counting them. Treat architecture, device power settings, memory, and real game tests as more useful context than a raw unit-count contest.
GPU architecture and game testing
The integrated GPU is central because it renders the game, but its name or unit count alone does not establish how well a handheld performs. Look for tests of the exact devices at the same game, resolution, graphics settings, and power profile. Average frame rate shows typical performance; low-percentile frame rates help reveal stutter and dips. Check that the test reports its hardware, drivers, and method.

A PC Gamer comparison published August 4, 2025 tested Ryzen Z2 Extreme against Core Ultra 7 258V in handhelds and found close aggregate results across its selected game tests. That is evidence against declaring a winner from specification sheets alone, not a verdict for every game, device, or power setting.
CPU cores, threads, and clocks
CPU specifications matter for game logic, background applications, and general responsiveness. Core and thread counts and boost clocks are useful context, but games vary in how much they depend on the CPU, and handhelds may not sustain their maximum advertised clocks. Don’t use a higher core count or boost clock by itself to predict which device will deliver more frames.

Power and shared memory
A chip’s configurable TDP range describes a processor capability, not a promise that a handheld will run at a particular wattage continuously. The device maker’s power profiles, cooling, firmware, and workload affect sustained performance, heat, and fan behavior. A higher-power mode can improve performance but may also increase heat, noise, or energy use; the chip’s TDP figure cannot tell you the whole-device battery runtime.
Integrated graphics uses system memory, so the handheld’s memory type, capacity, and bandwidth can affect gaming and how much memory remains available to Windows and other software. Check the specifications for the actual device rather than assuming that the processor’s product page determines its memory configuration. An NPU or AI TOPS figure is not a proxy for game frame rate; consider NPU capabilities only if local AI features are part of your intended workload.

How should you compare complete handhelds?
After narrowing down processors, compare the devices that use them. A small chip-level difference may matter less to everyday use than a better display, more comfortable controls, quieter cooling, or a lower price. AMD’s handheld category page names partner companies, but that does not establish that every named company currently sells a relevant model. Verify a specific model’s current availability and full configuration before deciding.
- Display: Compare resolution, refresh rate, screen size, brightness, and the load those choices place on the GPU. A higher resolution can demand more graphics performance to render a game at native resolution.
- Battery and power profiles: Check device-level testing or manufacturer details for the games and settings you expect to use. Chip TDP ranges alone do not establish battery life.
- Cooling and noise: Look for sustained-load testing and reports of fan noise or heat, not just a short peak-performance result.
- Memory and storage: Confirm installed memory capacity and type, available storage, and whether the device supports storage expansion.
- Controls, weight, and ergonomics: These affect comfort during long sessions and vary independently of the processor.
- Software support, warranty, and price: Check the specific model and region. The cited processor and category pages do not establish current retailer pricing or regional availability.
Which gaming handheld should you buy?
There is no well-supported universal winner between “Ryzen Z3” and “Intel Core Ultra”: the former is not listed in AMD’s cited lineup, and the latter describes multiple chips rather than one handheld processor. Choose by exact device, tested performance, and the trade-offs that matter to you.
- Write down the full processor name. Distinguish among Z2 Extreme, Z2, and Z1 Extreme; for Intel, identify the exact Core Ultra chip or Arc G model rather than relying on the family name.
- Find independent tests of the device you can actually buy. Prefer comparisons using the same game, resolution, settings, and power profile, and examine both average and low-percentile frame rates where reported.
- Match the test conditions to your use. A result at one resolution or high-power mode may not predict play at a lower-power setting or on a different screen.
- Choose the whole-device experience. Weigh display, memory, battery, cooling, controls, storage, software support, warranty, and price alongside gaming results.
AMD describes the Z2 Extreme as “The AMD Ryzen™ Z2 Extreme is the ultimate performance for elite handheld PC gaming.” That is AMD’s product positioning, not an independent performance comparison; device-level testing is more useful for deciding between handhelds.
