Some school districts are moving students from Chromebooks or iPads to a different device, but there is no single nationwide switch. The reasons vary: some older students need laptop-style tools for research and writing, some districts are changing how they manage and fund devices, and some schools are reducing young children’s take-home screen time while keeping tablets available in class. Those are related decisions, not one uniform trend.

Why some schools are moving from tablets to laptops

For Delaware Valley School District in Pennsylvania, the main reason is the shape of students’ academic work. The district says assignments increasingly require sustained research, writing and revision, multitasking, project work, browser-based tasks, file handling, peripherals, and teacher feedback. It concluded that MacBook Neo laptops better fit those workflows than its long-running one-to-one iPad model. Delaware Valley’s explanation also cites a desire for greater consistency with the tools teachers have used.

This is a local assessment of the district’s needs, not evidence that laptops are better for every student or subject. Tablets may suit other instructional uses, while laptops can be more natural for extended typing, managing files, and moving among several work tasks. Delaware Valley plans to retain specialist desktop computers for media, engineering, business, and graphic arts, where specialized software or performance is needed.

Why districts are choosing different devices

District decisions reflect more than a comparison of screens or operating systems. They also involve student age, curriculum, accessibility, staff familiarity, device management, repair and warranty arrangements, training, replacement schedules, and whether students take devices home or use shared classroom equipment.

Kansas City is moving toward Apple devices

Kansas City Public Schools announced in 2026 that it is targeting more than 30,000 Windows PCs and Chromebooks for replacement and has procured more than 4,500 MacBook Neos for students in grade 8 and above. The district’s stated rationale includes student access to updated products. Chief Technology Officer Scott Jones said, “Students are now proud of their schools because they have the best products.” That is the district’s view, not independent evidence of improved learning outcomes. Kansas City’s announcement describes its local plan; it does not establish a national replacement pattern.

Boise is planning a staged transition

Boise School District’s 2026 planning describes a staged move to Apple devices, with budget predictability and support among its goals. The district estimates savings of about $1 million over five years and cites expected teacher training, deployment assistance, and AppleCare. That figure is Boise’s estimate for its own plan, not an independent comparison showing Apple devices are generally less expensive. Boise’s device-refresh information sets out its local approach.

Poway is keeping an age-banded mix

Poway Unified School District in California illustrates why a district need not pick one device for every grade. Its published plan keeps iPads for younger students and Chromebooks for older students. In grades 3–5, the district plans to use classroom Chromebook carts so students do not have to take a computer home each day. Poway also publishes device and warranty costs for its own configurations; those figures depend on its listed equipment and warranty assumptions and should not be treated as a general price comparison. Poway’s technology-refresh page explains its plan.

Why some schools are reducing take-home device use

Changing which device students use is different from changing when or where they use it. Seattle Public Schools is not replacing its K–2 iPads with Chromebooks or laptops. Instead, beginning January 4, 2027, it plans to end individual K–2 iPad assignments and make device access classroom-based. The district says iPads will remain available for selected lessons, accessibility, and assessment, and describes typical daily technology use in those grades as 0–30 minutes, with some days having none. That is a district-stated range, not a measured average. Seattle’s announcement frames the policy around keeping technology complementary to early learning. Assistant Superintendent of Academics Michael Starosky and Assistant Superintendent of Tech Optimization Carlos Del Valle said, “Our focus is to ensure technology complements, rather than replaces, the hands-on, social, language-rich, and interpersonal experiences that are especially important during the early elementary years.”

Other districts have cited repair costs and distraction as reasons to end take-home device use for younger students, according to the Associated Press. AP also reported that Fresno Unified School District spends $4 million annually on laptop repairs and replacements, attributing the figure to the district. These examples concern device-use and support policies; they do not show that schools are broadly replacing Chromebooks with other brands. The AP report also attributes to the National Center for Education Statistics the finding that 96% of U.S. public schools provided digital devices to students who needed them in the 2021–2022 school year. That historical access statistic is not a measure of current replacement rates.

What the examples do—and do not—show

The districts point to different choices rather than a uniform migration: Kansas City is moving from Windows PCs and Chromebooks toward Apple devices; Delaware Valley is moving from iPads to MacBook Neo; Boise is planning a staged Apple transition; Poway is maintaining a mixed, age-banded fleet; and Seattle is changing K–2 access rules while retaining classroom iPads. These local plans should not be collapsed into a single claim that schools are replacing Chromebooks.

The cited announcements establish what those districts say they plan to do and why. They do not provide an independent, cross-district comparison of learning outcomes or total costs across device platforms, and they do not establish how many districts nationwide are replacing Chromebooks. Cost estimates and learning-effect claims should therefore be read as local unless comparable independent evidence is available.

  • What work must students do? Consider typing, research, file management, browser tasks, projects, peripherals, specialist software, and teacher feedback.
  • Which students and settings are involved? Age, accessibility needs, instructional goals, and the balance between hands-on and screen-based learning can point to different choices.
  • Will the device fit the school environment? Staff familiarity, existing tools, and the district’s ability to manage and support the fleet matter alongside device features.
  • What is the lifecycle plan? Compare the district’s own assumptions for purchase, warranty, repair, replacement timing, training, deployment, and ongoing support.
  • Where and when will students use devices? A one-to-one take-home assignment, a classroom cart, and shared access for selected lessons are different policies, even if the device itself is unchanged.

There is no universal ranking of Chromebooks, iPads, and laptops in these district examples. The appropriate choice depends on the work students need to do and the school’s capacity to fund, manage, and support it.
