They do not guarantee that specialist desktop software, school platforms or a required peripheral will work. Check your actual apps and workflow before deciding to leave a laptop behind.
What the Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra offers for laptop-style work
Samsung describes the Tab S12 Ultra as offering “laptop-like productivity” through its 14.6-inch display, Samsung DeX and a keyboard with trackpad. That is the manufacturer’s positioning, not evidence that every laptop task has an equivalent on the tablet. DeX is a tablet feature; the reviewed product information does not indicate that separate DeX hardware is needed. Samsung’s US product page also cautions that some specialized software may still require a laptop.
Keyboard, trackpad and S Pen
For extended typing and pointer use, Samsung names the Pro Keyboard with trackpad and the Book Cover Keyboard Slim. Check the exact model’s compatibility, local availability and price before buying. A keyboard changes how practical the tablet is for document-heavy work, but it does not make desktop applications run on Android.
Samsung says the S Pen is included. Its study-use guidance highlights taking notes, highlighting, sketching and working with multiple windows, so students who annotate material or handwrite notes may find it useful without buying a second pen. Samsung’s product information and its study-use guide describe these features; neither settles whether a particular school platform or exam system supports the tablet.

Which work and school tasks are a good fit?
Tom’s Guide’s October 1, 2026 general advice on Samsung tablets says they can stand in for a laptop for email, web work, video calls, note-taking, documents and light multitasking, while warning about Android app and DeX limitations. That is guidance about Samsung tablets generally, not a hands-on assessment of the S12 Ultra. Read the guide.
- Often a reasonable fit: browser-based work, email, calls, reading, handwritten or typed notes, and routine documents—provided the apps and collaboration features you need are available and work adequately on Android.
- Check carefully: complex spreadsheets, advanced document formatting, creative projects, large file workflows, external monitors, printers and other peripherals. Compatibility can depend on the particular Android app, its feature set and the connected device.
- Keep a laptop available: if your employer, school, exam provider or specialist workflow requires desktop-only software, a specific operating-system feature or a peripheral the tablet cannot use.
How to decide for your own workflow
- List required applications and functions. Include work or school portals, exam software, office tools, creative apps, file-management tasks and any add-ons. Check the Android version and specific features you rely on—not just whether an app with the same name exists.
- Confirm school or workplace requirements. Ask whether a browser or Android app is accepted for assignments, exams, remote access, security controls and required peripherals. A tablet’s ability to take notes does not establish institutional compatibility.
- Try your normal input and multitasking pattern. Consider whether DeX, a keyboard and trackpad, and the available window and file workflow handle the way you write, switch between references and apps, and submit work.
- Compare the complete setups. Price the tablet, the keyboard you would actually use, and any required software against a laptop that meets the same requirements. Final US pricing and a like-for-like price or weight comparison are not established in the cited product information.
- Choose based on the least-compatible essential task. If one required app or process only works on a laptop, the tablet may still be a useful companion, but it is not a safe sole-computer replacement for that workflow.
Availability and battery claims
Samsung’s US materials said availability would begin October 7, 2026; as of the product information dated October 3, 2026, that date had not arrived. Treat the S12 Ultra as announced rather than as a device with established independent hands-on results. Confirm current local availability, final price and keyboard compatibility at purchase.

Samsung advertises up to 23 hours of video playback on its UK product page. That is a manufacturer claim for video playback, not independent productivity testing or a guarantee that the tablet will last a full work or school day under your workload. Samsung UK’s product page gives the playback figure; the sources cited here do not establish an independent S12 Ultra productivity-battery result.
