To follow Cowboys roster moves, check the team’s official roster for a player’s listed status, the team’s depth chart for its current position ordering, and the Cowboys news archive for dated updates explaining what changed. The depth chart is explicitly labeled unofficial, so treat it as an ordering snapshot—not a promise about starters, playing time, or availability.
Start with the official Cowboys roster
Open the Dallas Cowboys roster page and find the player’s section. The page separates players into Active, Reserve/Designated to Return, Reserve/Injured, and Practice Squad. Those labels are more useful than simply seeing whether a name appears: the page presents different roster-status categories, not one undifferentiated list.
For a league-level cross-check, consult NFL.com’s Cowboys roster. If the team and league pages differ, compare their update times and status labels. Use the Cowboys’ own page or announcement for what the club has published, and treat NFL.com as a secondary roster view rather than assuming both pages update simultaneously.
Use the depth chart to see listed order—not to predict playing time
The Cowboys’ 2026 depth-chart page calls itself an “Unofficial 2026 Dallas Cowboys Depth Chart.” It can show which players the team lists first, second, or third at a position. Its order does not guarantee who will start, how many snaps someone will play, or whether a player will be available for the next game.

A roster page and a depth chart answer different questions: the roster identifies listed membership and status categories; the depth chart shows position-by-position ordering on that page. Check both when you want to know whether a player is listed and where the team places him.
Look up the dated update behind a change
A current roster page shows a state; it may not show the sequence or context behind a move. Search the Cowboys news archive for a dated team report. The archive includes later coverage—for example, October 2, 2026 reporting on a trade and player availability—so return to it after checking a roster or depth-chart snapshot.

Pay attention to the wording. A report of an agreement or expected move is not necessarily the same as an official announcement that a transaction is complete. When an article distinguishes a report from a completed transaction, look for the club’s announcement before treating the move as final.
Why the initial 53-player roster is only a snapshot
On August 30, 2026, the Cowboys reported trimming their roster from 91 players to 53. The team said the initial roster was “just the starting point” for personnel taking shape, with practice-squad formation and further transactions still to follow. In its cutdown account, the Cowboys also reported that 39 players moved off the roster, mostly through waivers. Those figures describe Dallas’s 2026 cutdown reporting; they are not general NFL rules or a season-long transaction total.

That is why it is worth checking again after training-camp cuts, the initial roster cutdown, practice-squad formation, and game-week injury updates. A page can be accurate for the moment it was captured and still become stale after a later transaction.
A quick routine for checking a player
- Check the Cowboys roster page. Find the player and note the exact section: Active, Reserve/Designated to Return, Reserve/Injured, or Practice Squad.
- Check the unofficial depth chart. Use its ordering only to see how the team lists players at that position.
- Search the Cowboys news archive. Find the dated report that explains the move, and distinguish a report from an announced completed transaction.
- Cross-check NFL.com if useful. Compare labels and update times rather than expecting all roster pages to change at once.
- Recheck after a high-change period. Cuts, practice-squad formation, and game-week updates can change the picture quickly.
When roster sources disagree
Use these checks to make sense of a mismatch:
- Authority: Is the item a Cowboys page or announcement, a league roster listing, or a media projection?
- Timestamp: When was the page or report published or updated?
- Purpose: Is it reporting roster membership and status, listed depth-chart order, or a transaction update?
- Status precision: Does it distinguish the team’s listed categories, or does it group every name together?
- Certainty: Does it confirm a completed move, describe a reported agreement, or offer a projection?
Start with the Cowboys’ dated announcement for the club’s account, then use the roster pages as current-state checks. Treat the depth chart according to its own unofficial label.
