Choose an iPad mini storage size by checking what you already keep on your iPad, then accounting for apps, downloads, and files you expect to keep available offline. The current iPad mini (A17 Pro) comes in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB; none is right for everyone. Apple’s specifications list these capacities for the model introduced in 2024.
Compare the three iPad mini storage options

Prices are Apple US Store starting prices observed on October 3, 2026, and may change. They are not global prices; connectivity configuration, retailer, and promotions can affect what you pay. Check Apple’s current iPad mini listing before comparing offers. At those listed starting prices, moving from 128GB to 256GB costs $100 more, while moving from 256GB to 512GB costs $200 more. The extra space is worthwhile only if you expect to use it.
Check your current storage use before buying
- On an iPad you already use, open Settings > General > iPad Storage. Apple says this screen shows available space, recommendations, and app storage use. See Apple’s storage-check instructions.
- Look beyond the app names. Check the space taken by app documents and data, photos and videos, downloaded entertainment, and files saved locally in Files or other apps.
- Think about how often you need content when you are offline. Movies, books, maps, and work files downloaded to the iPad use local capacity even if you could later sync or download them again.
- Consider whether these categories will grow during the time you plan to keep the iPad. There is no established universal number of gigabytes to reserve as a buffer, so base the decision on your own habits rather than a fixed rule.
- If you are choosing between capacities, weigh the actual price difference at checkout against the value of keeping more content on the iPad. The listed starting prices are snapshots, not guaranteed retailer prices.
Storage figures can shift as iPadOS manages cached and temporary data. Apple notes that some redownloadable or temporary items may be removed when space is low; that cleanup is not a dependable substitute for capacity if you regularly keep a large offline library.
Choose based on what you keep on the iPad
Choose 128GB when local use is modest
128GB is the lowest-capacity option. It may suit a setup with a limited set of apps, few large downloads, and little media or work material kept locally. Check your current usage first; a light routine today may not reflect how you plan to use the tablet over its ownership period.

Choose 256GB for a broader mix
256GB gives you more room than 128GB for a combination of apps, their data, downloads, and files. It is a reasonable middle option if your use is varied or likely to grow, but it is not an automatic recommendation: compare its added cost with the local space you actually expect to need.
Choose 512GB for substantial local libraries
512GB is the largest listed capacity. Consider it if you expect to keep substantial amounts of media or work files on the iPad, particularly when you need them without an internet connection. If most of your content is streamed or stored elsewhere, the additional built-in space may not be useful to you.

iCloud and external drives do not add built-in capacity
Device storage is the fixed local space on the iPad. Apple defines it as “the storage on your Apple device, such as your iPhone or iPad.” iCloud storage is separate and can hold supported backups, photos, files, and synced data. See Apple’s explanation of iCloud and device storage. iCloud features can help manage what remains on the device, but they do not turn a 128GB iPad mini into a higher-capacity model; installed apps and content kept locally still use device storage.
You can also connect compatible external storage and transfer files through apps such as Files or Pages. A cable or adapter may be needed depending on the iPad and drive. Apple describes the process in its guide to transferring files from iPad to storage devices. External storage can help with moving or archiving large files, but it is an accessory, not an expansion of internal capacity. Before relying on a drive for your workflow, check connection, power, format, and app compatibility.
