This does not delete or hide existing chats. Memory, Temporary Chat, archiving, and deletion are separate controls, so choose each based on what you want to retain or remove.
How to turn off model improvement and keep chat history
For a signed-in personal account, switching off Improve the model for everyone prevents new conversations from being used to improve OpenAI models, while regular chats can still appear in your history. The preference applies across devices for signed-in accounts. It does not hide or delete saved, archived, or Project chats. OpenAI describes this control in its Data controls FAQ.
On the web
- Open the account menu.
- Choose Settings, then Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone and confirm with Done.
On iOS or Android
- Open the sidebar and tap your profile icon.
- Open Data controls.
- Switch off Improve the model for everyone.
For personal accounts, chats and remembered information may be used to improve models when the setting is on. OpenAI says explicit feedback, such as a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, can result in the associated conversation being used even after opting out. See How your data is used to improve model performance. If your goal is to remove content rather than stop future model-improvement use, delete the relevant chat or account separately.

When to use Temporary Chat
Choose Temporary Chat for a conversation you do not want added to regular history or used to create or update Memory. While it remains temporary, OpenAI says it will not be used to improve its models. OpenAI may retain a copy for safety for up to 30 days. See the Temporary Chat FAQ.
Temporary does not necessarily mean unpersonalized. When starting the chat, you may allow it to use existing memories, custom instructions, and plugins. If you do not want that personalization, choose the non-personalized option at the start; that choice cannot be changed after the conversation begins. If you save the Temporary Chat, it becomes a regular chat and follows your account’s personalization and model-improvement settings.

Workspace and account restrictions take priority. If a GPT action sends information to a third party, the recipient’s privacy policy governs the data it receives and may permit longer retention than OpenAI’s safety period.
How to review, switch off, or delete Memory
Memory is separate from chat history and is not a complete transcript. Depending on your account, you may see controls such as Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Manage, or Saved memories under Settings > Personalization. The available controls and labels vary. The summary is a high-level view and may omit details; Memory may draw on available sources beyond prior chats, including saved memories and, where available, custom instructions, Library files, or connected apps. Remove a saved Memory
Deleting a chat where a fact appeared does not necessarily delete a separate Memory created from it. To remove the remembered fact, use the Memory management control to delete it. If you also want its source removed, delete the chat or file separately.
Turn off chat-history reference
Turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days; it does not delete the original chats. Turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history where those options are combined. If Memory is off and later re-enabled, ChatGPT may create memories from chats still in history.

Archive a chat or delete it?
Archive when you want to hide, not remove
Archiving removes a conversation from the regular sidebar but keeps it in your account, where archived chats remain searchable. Find them in Settings > Data controls > Archived chats or the equivalent on your device, then unarchive or delete as needed. Details are in OpenAI’s guide to deleting and archiving chats.
Delete when you want the chat removed
Deletion removes the conversation from your account immediately and schedules permanent deletion from OpenAI systems within 30 days. OpenAI notes exceptions if the data has already been de-identified and disassociated or must be retained longer for legal or security obligations. Deleted chats cannot be restored. Deleting a chat does not remove an original connected-app source or a separate Library file; disconnect an app to prevent future access and delete retained files from Library separately. Work or school accounts may have different controls
Business, Enterprise, Edu, and Healthcare workspaces can have different defaults and organization-level retention, Memory, compliance, and access settings. OpenAI says workspace content is not used to train models by default, but an organization’s policies still apply. Self-service export or deletion options may differ for managed accounts; contact the workspace owner if a control is unavailable. OpenAI’s data controls guidance and model-improvement explanation distinguish personal and managed-account practices.
