A broad library description or a low headline price is not enough to show that a subscription fits your household.
1. Start with the titles and programming you actually want
Make a shortlist of must-watch titles, genres, or live programming before comparing services. Then check whether those items are available in the service’s catalog in your country. A service’s general description of its library does not guarantee that a particular title is available where you live.
For example, Hulu describes its library as including full seasons of exclusive series, current episodes, movies, Hulu Originals, and kids’ shows, and says it continually adds content. Treat that as a description of the service, not a guarantee that any particular title will be available to you: Hulu’s library and plan description.
- List the specific titles or live programming that would make the subscription worthwhile.
- Check availability in your country before paying; catalogs can differ by region and change over time.
- Give more weight to titles your household will actually watch than to a service’s broad library claims.
2. Compare the recurring cost of the plan you need
Compare the plan that meets your household’s requirements, not just the cheapest advertised tier. Check whether it includes ads, how many devices can stream at once, video resolution, downloads, and any extra-member options or charges. Also account for whether a bundle would replace subscriptions you already pay for or simply add another bill.

As a dated US example, Netflix’s Help Center listed the following monthly prices and plan differences when accessed October 3, 2026. Netflix says plans are billed monthly and notes that prices and eligibility can vary by country or billing package, so these figures should not be treated as a permanent or universal price list: Netflix plans and pricing.
| Netflix US plan | Monthly price listed October 3, 2026 | Feature differences to check |
|---|---|---|
| Standard with ads | $8.99/month | Ads, simultaneous devices, resolution, downloads, and extra-member options |
| Standard | $19.99/month | Ads, simultaneous devices, resolution, downloads, and extra-member options |
| Premium | $26.99/month | Ads, simultaneous devices, resolution, downloads, and extra-member options |
The Netflix page describes differences across these features; check its current plan details to see which specific options come with each tier. A dated US bundle example from Disney+ illustrates why you should compare bundles with your existing subscriptions: its September 23, 2026 help page listed Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Select Basic at $21.99/month and Premium at $32.99/month for new subscriptions starting August 20, 2026. Disney+ notes that third-party billing prices may vary and that each service is subject to its own terms. See Disney+ plans and prices for the applicable details.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Use the total recurring cost that applies to your billing route. A bundle is useful only if its included services and features match what your household wants; avoid counting a service as a saving if it does not replace a subscription you would otherwise keep.
3. Check cancellation timing and billing responsibility
Cancellation may stop the next renewal without ending access immediately. Before subscribing, find the renewal date, when cancellation takes effect, whether a trial or promotion changes the timing, and which company bills you. Save the cancellation confirmation so you have a record of the request.

Hulu
Hulu’s subscriber agreement describes recurring payment plans and says cancellation generally takes effect at the end of the current subscription term, free trial, or promotion, unless otherwise disclosed at purchase. Read the agreement and the terms shown when you subscribe: Hulu Subscriber Agreement.
Peacock
Peacock says cancellation prevents renewal at the end of the current term. It generally does not provide refunds or credits, except where required by law, and a subscription billed by a third party may need to be cancelled through that billing provider. See Peacock’s cancellation guidance.

Max
Max says cancellation steps depend on who bills the subscription. Check the billing details in your account and follow the relevant instructions: Max help for the US and Max help for Malaysia.
For any service, inspect its account billing page to identify the billing provider and the effective cancellation date. If another company handles billing, cancelling directly with the streaming service may not end that subscription.

4. Make a side-by-side decision
Use your shortlist to compare services on the same terms. The examples below are prompts for your own comparison, not a ranking: catalog availability, total recurring cost, and cancellation rules depend on your country, plan, and billing route.
| What to compare | Question to answer |
|---|---|
| Local catalog | Are the titles, genres, or live programs you want available in your country? |
| Plan features | Does the plan fit your needs for ads, simultaneous streams, resolution, downloads, and sharing? |
| Total cost | What recurring price applies to your plan and billing route, and does a bundle replace subscriptions you already pay for? |
| Cancellation | When does cancellation take effect, are refunds or credits available, and which company must process the cancellation? |
Prices and plan details can change. For historical context only, the FCC’s 2024 report includes examples of streaming plan prices; those examples should not be treated as current prices: FCC 24-136. Recheck each service’s current plan and billing pages before subscribing.
