Turn off and unplug your iPad, then gently wipe the protector with a clean, dry, soft microfiber cloth. If smudges remain, use a barely damp cloth with water, keep moisture away from the edges and openings, and dry the surface before drawing. Check your protector maker’s instructions before using soap, alcohol, or any screen-cleaning solution: care guidance differs by product.
Clean it gently, starting with a dry cloth
- Turn off and unplug the iPad. Disconnect charging cables and accessories before cleaning.
- Wipe away dust. Use a clean, soft, lint-free microfiber cloth with light strokes. Do not scrub or press hard.
- Dampen the cloth only if needed. If fingerprints or residue remain, put a little water on a clean section of cloth. It should be barely damp, not wet.
- Wipe carefully. Gently clean the protector, avoiding its edges and the iPad’s ports, buttons, speakers, and other openings. Do not let liquid pool or run into the device.
- Dry before using the iPad. Use a separate clean, dry part of the cloth, especially before writing or drawing with Apple Pencil.
Apple’s iPad guidance recommends a “soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth” and says to keep moisture out of openings. That is a conservative baseline for the device beneath a protector, not a guarantee that every cleaner is safe for every third-party film. Apple’s iPad cleaning guidance
Which cleaners are safe for a paper-feel protector?
There is no single cleaner established as safe for every paper-feel film. Follow the care instructions for your exact protector before trying anything beyond water on a cloth.

Paperlike’s general article says to apply liquid to the cloth rather than spray the device, and describes using a second damp cloth to remove residue. What to avoid
- Abrasive materials: Avoid paper towels, tissues, rough fabric, and abrasive pads. Apple warns that abrasive rubbing can scratch the screen and further diminish oleophobic performance. Apple
- Hard scrubbing or sharp tools: These can damage the protector or the device surface beneath it.
- Direct sprays and excess liquid: Do not spray cleaner onto the iPad or let liquid collect at the protector edges, ports, or other openings.
- Unapproved household cleaners: Apple’s iPad guidance cautions against window cleaners, household cleaners, solvents, ammonia, aerosols, abrasives, and hydrogen-peroxide cleaners. Apple’s guidance
- Assuming alcohol wipes are universally safe: Apple’s general allowance for certain disinfectant wipes on hard, nonporous Apple product surfaces does not establish that they are safe for every third-party matte film. Check the protector maker’s directions first.
If the protector is removable
For a magnetic removable protector, follow its maker’s instructions for detaching it before cleaning the protector or the iPad beneath it. ESR recommends cleaning the iPad surface, especially around magnetic edges, because dirt there can weaken magnetic attachment.
