A consumer DNA test can help you find biological relatives if it includes autosomal DNA matching. Start with your closest matches, compare shared matches and family trees, then use records to test possible connections. A predicted relationship is a lead—not proof—and you can only match people whose data are available in the service and whose settings permit matching.
Choose a test with autosomal relative matching
For a broad search across both sides of your biological family, look for an autosomal DNA test with a relative-match list. Ancestry recommends its DNA test for finding biological family, and FamilyTreeDNA describes Family Finder as an autosomal matching service. Neither a test nor a provider can show relatives who have not tested in that service’s database or whose settings prevent them from appearing.
There is no established “best” provider for every search. Relevant differences include who participates in each database, whether the service provides shared-match or chromosome tools, its privacy and sharing controls, and how its tools support family-tree research. The available provider information does not establish a definitive comparison of database effectiveness.
Autosomal DNA combines DNA inherited from both parents, making it useful for finding relatives on either side. Y-DNA and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) tests follow narrower direct paternal and maternal lines, respectively; they are not replacements for a broad autosomal search. See FamilyTreeDNA’s explanation of autosomal testing.

Prepare while your results are processing
Write down what you already know, including non-identifying details from adoption records or family documents, and start a family tree with the information you can verify. This gives you a framework for comparing match trees later. Ancestry’s Finding Biological Family guide also recommends documenting known biological family while waiting for results.
Work from close matches toward possible family branches
Record the details of each close match
Begin with the closest matches in your list. For each, note the shared centimorgans (cM), the service’s predicted relationship and any alternate possibilities it shows, plus visible tree details, surnames, places, and known relatives. Ancestry describes cM as a measure related to the likelihood that a DNA segment passes to a descendant intact—not a physical-distance measurement—and says that more shared cM generally indicates a closer relationship. Its guide to measuring relationships explains how the match list presents shared DNA and possible relationships.

Do not treat a cM amount or relationship label as conclusive. Different family relationships can produce similar amounts of shared DNA, and random recombination can make relatives appear closer or farther apart than expected. More distant relatives may also fall below a service’s matching threshold. A missing match does not disprove a family connection.
Compare shared matches and look for recurring clues
Check which of your matches also match one another. Groups of shared matches, recurring surnames, familiar locations, or the same ancestor appearing in several trees can suggest a branch to investigate. These are clues to a possible common ancestor, not confirmation of one.

Trace the likely branch toward living relatives
Once a possible ancestor emerges, build out that person’s family and trace children and grandchildren forward toward living generations. Family trees, obituaries, directories, and other records can help identify leads and connect historical people to later generations. Treat each record as evidence to assess, not standalone proof that a particular living person has the relationship you suspect.
Test the hypothesis with DNA comparisons and records
Autosomal matching alone does not label every match as maternal or paternal. If a known biological relative is willing to test, comparing their matches with yours may help assign people to a side or branch. FamilyTreeDNA notes that comparisons with tested relatives can help determine which portions of autosomal DNA belong to which ancestral line.

- Discover your ancestry and find relatives you never knew existed on both your maternal and paternal sides.
- Get a detailed ethnicity breakdown with the most comprehensive list of ethnicities in the industry: 42 regions, including 7 East Asian regions.

Then check whether the proposed relationship fits both the DNA evidence and documentary records. Records can help distinguish between relationships that could share similar amounts of DNA and link an ancestral branch to living generations. FamilySearch’s introduction to DNA and genealogy discusses combining genetic evidence with genealogical research.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Review privacy settings and approach matches gently
Before enabling relative matching, read the service’s current privacy and sharing controls. At FamilyTreeDNA, matching is optional, and information visible to matches can depend on matching and tree-sharing choices. Its information-sharing guide lists possible details such as contact information, ancestral surnames, earliest known ancestors, trees, chromosome data, and selected ethnicity information. For 23andMe, the DNA Relatives support index points to separate topics on relative detection, relationship predictions, relatives in common, and privacy and display settings; it does not establish fine-grained current defaults or retention rules.

An unexpected message can bring sensitive family history to light. Ancestry cautions that “Your message may come as a surprise, so it’s smart to be sensitive to the possible family dynamics.” A respectful first note can explain that you are researching your biological family, ask whether the person is open to discussing a possible connection, and make clear that they do not have to respond. Avoid demanding personal information or a disclosure.
Get help if the evidence is difficult to untangle
If you have several plausible branches or cannot interpret the match patterns, a professional genetic genealogist may be able to combine DNA evidence with traditional records. Ancestry’s guide names its ProGenealogists service; check the provider’s current availability and scope before relying on it.
