Choose the method that matches what you have available, and begin while the iPad is still at its Hello setup screen; restoring a backup or using Move to iOS after setup requires erasing the iPad.
Choose a transfer method

Apple’s general iPad setup guidance applies to iPad mini as well; it does not require a particular mini generation. Before starting, make sure you can connect to Wi-Fi, know your Apple Account password, and have the old device or a backup ready. Apple says eligible new iPad buyers who need more iCloud space for a transfer can use temporary iCloud storage for up to three weeks. See Apple’s new iPad setup guidance.
Transfer from an iPhone or iPad with Quick Start
Quick Start can configure the new iPad from a nearby Apple device and offer a direct wireless transfer. For automatic setup, the old device needs iOS 11 or iPadOS 13 or later. Direct wireless transfer requires iOS 12.4 or iPadOS 13 or later on both devices, according to Apple’s current iPad setup guide.
- Connect the old iPhone or iPad to Wi-Fi, turn on Bluetooth, and unlock it.
- Turn on the new iPad mini and place it near the old device.
- Follow the onscreen Quick Start prompts to configure the iPad.
- When offered a transfer choice, select direct transfer to migrate from the old device, or choose the iCloud download option if you want to begin using the iPad while apps and data continue downloading.
- Keep both devices close together and plugged into power until the transfer or initial setup is complete.
Direct transfer makes both devices unavailable for use during migration. Apple does not promise a standard completion time: “Transfer times can vary based on factors such as network conditions and the amount of data being transferred.” (Apple Support, Use Quick Start to transfer data to a new iPhone or iPad, published July 20, 2026.) Quick Start cannot transfer from the current device when the new iPad is enrolled in Apple School Manager or Apple Business, according to that guidance.

Restore an iCloud backup
Use this route when the iCloud backup you need is already available. The iPad must be at its Hello/setup stage to restore from a backup.
- During setup, connect the iPad mini to Wi-Fi.
- Choose the option to restore from an iCloud backup.
- Sign in with the Apple Account used for the backup.
- Check the backup’s date and size, then select the appropriate backup.
- Keep the iPad connected to Wi-Fi and power while data restores and downloads.
Apple’s steps are in its backup restore guide. Some content may continue downloading after setup, so keep the iPad connected while that work completes.

Restore a backup from a Mac or PC
If you backed up the previous iPhone or iPad to a computer, Apple supports restoring backups made with Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes. Start with the new iPad at the Hello/setup screen and have the Apple Account password available. Follow Apple’s restore instructions for the backup and computer app you used.
Move data from Android with Move to iOS
Move to iOS is an initial-setup option; it is not available as a migration flow after the iPad has already been configured.

- On the iPad mini’s Transfer Your Apps & Data screen, choose “From Android.”
- On the Android device, enable Wi-Fi and open the Move to iOS app.
- Follow the prompts shown on both devices to continue the transfer.
For Apple’s full setup directions, see the iPad setup guide. If the new iPad is already set up, Apple says you must erase it to use this route, or move content manually instead.

Restoring an iCloud or computer backup and transferring with Move to iOS require the iPad to be new or erased and back at the setup flow. Before erasing, make sure any important content currently on the iPad is backed up; erasing removes its contents and settings. Then use the relevant setup-stage steps above. Apple’s restore guidance explains the requirement in its backup restore instructions.
