Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf Windows Update appears stuck at 0% or 100%, stops between 51% and 99%, or fails and rolls back, start with the Windows Update troubleshooter for your version of Windows. Restart and try again, then use any error code to choose a more specific repair. A percentage that has not changed does not, by itself, establish that an update is frozen: download and installation time depends on the update and your connection.
First, identify where the update is failing
Note whether Windows Update is stuck while checking, downloading, installing, or restarting. Write down the full error code and message, if one appears. Microsoft’s message may read, “There were problems installing some updates, but we’ll try again later.” Error codes can point toward possible causes, but they are not guaranteed diagnoses.
Microsoft says download and installation time depends on connection speed, network settings, and update size. Its guidance does not set a universal number of minutes that proves an update is stuck. If progress remains at the same percentage, check for updates again or run the troubleshooter rather than relying on elapsed time alone. See Microsoft Support’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.

- Complete its prompts, restart the PC, then return to Windows Update and check again.

Check the connection, drive space, and restart
- Connection: Confirm that the PC is connected to the internet. Interrupted or slow connectivity can affect downloads.
- Available space: Open File Explorer > This PC and check the available space on the Windows drive. Microsoft’s stated minimums of 16 GB free for upgrading a 32-bit OS and 20 GB free for upgrading a 64-bit OS apply to OS upgrades; they are not a general requirement for every routine update. Check the requirements for the specific update or upgrade. A device with a small drive may need a USB drive for an update.
- Restart: If Windows is responsive, restart it before trying Windows Update again.
For steps to review and free storage, see Microsoft’s Windows storage guidance.

Repair system files with DISM, then SFC
Use these commands only when the relevant Microsoft troubleshooting guidance points to corrupted system files. Both require administrator permission. Microsoft’s published order is DISM first, followed by System File Checker (SFC).
- Open Command Prompt as an administrator.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand wait for it to complete. - Enter
sfc /scannow. Leave the Command Prompt window open until verification reaches 100%; the scan can take time. - Restart Windows when the repair is complete, then check for updates again.

Escalate only after backing up your files
Back up personal files before trying broader recovery steps. If the failure began after a recent update, uninstalling that update may help; Microsoft provides the option through the Windows Recovery Environment. Resetting or reinstalling Windows are more consequential choices, so review their effects and instructions before proceeding.
Use Microsoft’s update troubleshooting page for update removal guidance and its Windows recovery options page to compare recovery choices.

Troubleshooting a failed update may address the immediate problem, but it does not restore that support. See Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting page for the current support context.
