What makes a game feel like Ape Escape?
Ape Escape is more specific than a general 3D platformer: it combines sneaking up on apes, capturing them with gadgets, and exploring themed levels. Sony’s PlayStation Blog roundup highlights careful movement and gadget use; the US PlayStation Store listing names tools including a slingshot, monkey-net, flying propeller, remote-controlled car, and monkey radar. It describes more than 20 levels and bonus mini-games such as ski racing and Monkey Boxing.

Those elements point to several different kinds of alternatives: collectible-focused exploration, gadget-based action, stealth, or playful platforming. The games below overlap with particular ingredients rather than duplicating the capture objective.
Which Ape Escape alternative should you choose?
| Game | Closest match | Platforms established by the cited sources | How it differs |
|---|---|---|---|
| A Hat in Time | Colorful 3D exploration and collecting | Steam and PlayStation 4 purchase platforms are listed on the official support page. | Collectathon objectives, not monkey-catching. |
| Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | Gadgets, traversal, and action | PS5, plus PC through Steam and Epic Games Store, according to Sony’s PC product page. | More combat-forward than Ape Escape. |
| Astro Bot | Modern 3D platforming and PlayStation cameos | PS5 only, according to Team Asobi. | Platform adventure rather than capture-focused play. |
| Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy | Classic PlayStation 3D exploration | Current PC availability is not established by Sony’s cited January 2025 catalog roundup. | A colorful mascot adventure, but not built around gadgets and catching. |
| Sackboy: A Big Adventure | Playful platforming with friends | Sony’s January 2025 roundup describes local and online co-op for up to four players. | Its clearest overlap is cooperative platforming, not capture mechanics. |
| Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus | Stealth and sneaking | Included in the cited Sony January 2025 catalog roundup; current PC availability is not established there. | Stealth and thieving replace sneaking up to catch apes. |
| Psychonauts | Imaginative settings and action-adventure platforming | The cited Sony 2017 classic-platformer roundup is historical and does not establish current platform availability. | A neighboring genre recommendation, not a close match for the capture loop. |
| Yooka-Laylee | Open-world collectathon structure | The cited Sony 2017 roundup describes the game but does not establish current store availability. | Collectibles and quirky characters, without Ape Escape’s gadget-led pursuit. |
Best for collectathon exploration: A Hat in Time
Pick A Hat in Time if what you remember most is moving through colorful 3D spaces and searching for things to collect. PlayStation describes it as a collectathon with large, sprawling levels in its January 2025 roundup. Its Steam and PS4 purchase platforms are listed by the game’s support site.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires Dual-Shock Analog Controller to play
The similarity is in exploration and collecting, not the target or toolset: the game does not reproduce Ape Escape’s monkey-catching premise. PlayStation included it in the Game Catalog in that January 2025 roundup, but subscription catalog availability can change and vary by region.
Best for gadgets and action: Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
Rift Apart suits players drawn to switching tools, traversing lively environments, and using gadgets in an action platformer. PlayStation’s roundup emphasizes shooting and gadget-driven navigation. The game is available on PS5 and, per Sony’s PC page, on PC through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Rank #2
- Catch 'Em All: Hunt down over 200 unique monkeys, each with their own distinct personalities, alert levels, and hilarious behaviors.
- Innovative Gadgets: Master a creative arsenal of tools—including the Stun Club, Time Net, Monkey Radar, Sky Flyer, and RC Car—to outsmart your primate foes.
- Time-Traveling Adventure: Explore massive, colorful levels spanning across different time periods, from the prehistoric dinosaur age to the Great Wall of China.
- Revolutionary Controls: Fully utilizes the DualShock controller's twin analog sticks for immersive 360-degree movement and gadget control (Dual-Shock Analog Controller required to play).
Its stronger emphasis on combat makes it a looser fit if your favorite part of Ape Escape was stalking and capturing targets rather than fighting enemies.
Best for PlayStation platforming and cameos: Astro Bot
Astro Bot is a natural choice for a modern PlayStation platform adventure, especially if PlayStation character appearances are part of the appeal. Team Asobi says the adventure spans more than 50 planets and identifies the game as PS5-exclusive on its official game page. That page lists a September 6, 2024 release date.
Rank #3
This is a PS5 recommendation; Team Asobi’s page does not list a PC version. Its appeal is platforming and PlayStation history, not Ape Escape’s specific capture loop.
More options for classic exploration, stealth, or co-op
Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy
For a classic mascot adventure built around exploring colorful environments, consider Jak and Daxter: The Precursor Legacy. Sony describes it as a PS2-era platforming adventure in the January 2025 roundup. That source does not establish current PC availability, so check the store for the platform you intend to use.
Rank #4
- Capture over 200 Monkeys
- Eight different worlds
- Over 20 levels
- Single-player and Multiplayer via Wireless connection
Sackboy: A Big Adventure
Choose Sackboy: A Big Adventure if you want a cheerful platformer to play with others. Sony’s roundup describes local and online co-op for up to four players. That makes it a social-play recommendation rather than a close mechanical match for catching apes.
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus overlaps with Ape Escape through sneaking. Sony frames its appeal as platforming combined with stealth and thieving in the January 2025 roundup. Its objectives and feel are different, and that source does not establish current PC availability.
Best Value
- Capture over 200 Monkeys
- Eight different worlds
- Over 20 levels
- Single-player and Multiplayer via Wireless connection
Psychonauts
For imaginative settings and action-adventure platforming, Sony’s 2017 roundup highlights Psychonauts. Because that article is historical, its platform references should not be treated as proof of current availability. Check current listings for your platform.
Yooka-Laylee
Yooka-Laylee is another genre-level option if open spaces, collectibles, and quirky characters sound appealing. Sony’s 2017 roundup describes its open-world collectathon structure and late-1990s callbacks; it does not establish current store availability.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can you play on PlayStation and PC?
Check the specific game and platform rather than assuming that a PlayStation recommendation also has a PC version. The available evidence supports these distinctions:
- A Hat in Time: its official support page lists Steam and PS4 purchase platforms.
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart: Sony lists a PC edition on Steam and Epic Games Store, alongside its PS5 version.
- Astro Bot: Team Asobi lists it as PS5-exclusive; its official page does not list a PC version.
- Jak and Daxter, Sackboy, and Sly Cooper: Sony’s cited January 2025 roundup does not establish current PC availability for these games.
Sony’s January 2025 roundup included A Hat in Time, Ape Escape, Jak and Daxter, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, Sackboy, and Sly Cooper in the cited PlayStation subscription catalogs at that time. Catalogs can change, and Sony notes that regional lineups may differ. Check your local catalog before subscribing or planning around access.

Which version of Ape Escape is available on current PlayStation?
The US PlayStation Store listing presents a converted version of Ape Escape for PS4 and PS5. It lists up-rendering, rewind, quick save, and custom video filters, and states compatibility with DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controllers.
