Before buying, confirm that the exchange can withdraw to the address type your wallet accepts—especially if you want shielded transactions. Once withdrawn, protect the wallet’s recovery seed or private key: without a usable backup, losing access to it can mean losing access to your ZEC permanently.
Before you buy: choose how you want to use ZEC
Buying ZEC and deciding how to store or transact with it are separate decisions. Exchange availability, payment methods, identity requirements, fees, and withdrawal options vary by provider and country. Zcash’s guidance recommends choosing an exchange that supports shielded withdrawals if you are funding a wallet for shielded use. Zcash’s exchange guidance also identifies your location as a factor, so there is no reliable universal exchange recommendation without knowing where you live.

Decide whether you want to leave ZEC with the exchange or take control of it in a wallet. Funds left on an exchange remain subject to the provider’s custody and account-access policies. With self-custody, you control the keys, but you also become responsible for securing them and maintaining a recovery backup.
How to buy and withdraw Zcash
- Check local availability. Find an exchange that serves your country and supports ZEC purchases. Review its current payment methods, account and identity requirements, fees, and withdrawal rules directly with the provider; these details can change and are not established universally.
- Choose the receiving wallet first. Decide whether you need transparent addresses, shielded addresses, or a wallet that supports both. Check the wallet’s current instructions and address format before relying on an exchange withdrawal.
- Verify the withdrawal path. Ask whether the exchange supports ZEC withdrawals to the exact address type your wallet provides. Do not assume that a provider supports shielded withdrawals just because it lists ZEC.
- Buy the amount you intend to move. Review the exchange’s quoted purchase and withdrawal costs before confirming. No single fee or cheapest provider applies to every location and payment method.
- Withdraw to your wallet. Copy the receiving address using the wallet’s instructions, then check that the exchange accepts that address format. If the workflow permits, send a small test transfer first; verify that it arrives and that you can use it as intended before transferring a larger amount.
- Secure the recovery information. Follow the wallet’s own backup and recovery instructions. Keep the seed phrase or private key secret and protected from loss. Never share it with anyone or enter it into a website or support chat.
Understand transparent and shielded transactions
Zcash supports transparent and shielded activity, but using ZEC or a shielded-capable wallet does not automatically make every transaction private. When a transaction involves a transparent address as sender or recipient, details of that transparent address and the amount are publicly posted on the blockchain, according to the Zcash wallet UX checklist.
#1 Best Overall
A shielded-to-shielded transaction encrypts sender, recipient, amount, and memo details from public view while still allowing the network to verify the transaction. Transaction fees remain visible. Wallet behavior varies: some wallets support only transparent addresses, some support both address types, and some shield funds by default or offer autoshielding. Check what your wallet actually does before sending.
Match the exchange withdrawal to your wallet
Address compatibility is a practical requirement, not a detail to leave until after purchase. Zcash unified addresses can combine multiple address types, and wallet support determines which features are available. An exchange’s withdrawal format and your wallet’s supported address type must be compatible. See Zcash’s explanation of unified addresses and confirm the receiving wallet’s own current instructions.
If shielded use is your goal, confirm both ends of the transfer: the exchange must support withdrawals to the intended shielded destination, and the wallet must be able to receive and use that address type. A mismatch can prevent a withdrawal or leave you unable to use the privacy features you expected.

In a self-custody wallet, the private key authorizes spending. A SEC-filed report warns that losing a key without a backup can permanently remove access. Zcash documentation also describes using a master seed to back up Sapling addresses. The exact backup and recovery process depends on the wallet, so use that wallet’s official instructions rather than assuming every wallet handles seeds the same way.
- Keep the recovery seed or private key private; legitimate support should not need you to disclose it.
- Store the backup somewhere protected from both theft and accidental loss, and consider how you would recover it if your usual device became unavailable.
- Do not rely on a backup accessory or storage method unless you have independently established that it suits your security needs; the wallet’s recovery instructions remain essential.
Is a hardware wallet right for Zcash?
A hardware wallet may suit someone who wants to sign transactions using a device kept offline, but the label “hardware wallet” does not establish support for every Zcash address type or shielded workflow. Zcash’s ecosystem directory lists wallet categories and includes Keystone, but that listing alone does not confirm support for a particular device model, companion wallet, or shielded transaction workflow.
Before buying a device, verify the exact model, its companion-wallet requirements, how signing and recovery work, and whether the complete setup supports the address type and transactions you plan to use. If you cannot confirm shielded compatibility, do not treat the device as a solution for shielded ZEC storage or use.
