Obey barriers, signs, and closures; check local weather, tide times, and official alerts before setting out. Cliffs can fail without warning, and no photograph makes an unsafe route worth taking.
Why cliffs are not safe just because they look solid
Cliff edges may be unstable or hidden, and rockfall can happen without a clear warning. HM Coastguard says cliffs can be more unstable than they appear and that falls or rockslides can happen at any time. The UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s 2019 notice, quoting HM Coastguard, puts it plainly: “It’s impossible to predict when the next piece might fall or how big it will be.” HM Coastguard’s coastal safety guidance and the 2019 Sidestrand notice both warn against treating appearance as proof of stability.
The cliff base is not a safe workaround. Rockfalls and landslides can reach beaches below cliffs, and waves or a rising tide can leave visitors with less room to move or cut off an exit. A viewpoint below a cliff may therefore be hazardous even when it is well away from the top edge.
Choose a viewpoint before choosing a composition
Start with the route, not the frame. Choose an open, designated lookout or established path set back from the cliff. Follow the responsible park or coast authority’s current route, signs, fences, and closure notices. Do not cross a barrier or leave a marked path to get a wider angle, foreground, or lower perspective. The NSW National Parks cliff-safety guidance and the Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority’s cliff-risk guidance emphasize staying on established routes and respecting barriers and local directions.

When comparing places to shoot, consider whether the viewpoint is designated and open, whether access passes near a cliff edge or below a cliff face, how the tide affects the route and exits, what current weather and access alerts say, and whether the walk is remote enough for limited mobile coverage to matter.
Check conditions and plan your return
- Check official alerts and access rules. Before travel, review the responsible park or coast authority’s notices for closures, route changes, or hazards. Recheck close to your visit because local status can change.
- Check local weather and tide information. Know the tide times for the location, where the exit points are, and how long the return takes. Leave enough time to get out before water blocks a route. HM Coastguard advises planning around tides, weather, and exit points in its coastal safety guidance.
- Watch both the land and the sea. A beach route can become constrained by waves as well as by a cliff face. California State Parks advises visitors at the bluffs covered by its guidance to time beach visits around low tide so there is room between the bluffs and waves. That is site-specific advice, not a guarantee of safety at other beaches; follow the local authority’s directions. See California State Parks’ Beach Safety page.
- Tell someone your plan. Share your route and expected return time, and carry a charged phone. For remote walks where mobile service may be absent, NSW National Parks recommends considering a personal locator beacon (PLB); the agency notes that free hire is available at certain locations. A PLB is an added precaution, not permission to use a closed or unsafe route.
Keep the camera position inside the safe area
If the designated viewpoint does not give the composition you wanted, change the composition or choose another open viewpoint. A telephoto lens is one general photography option for framing distant details without moving closer, but it does not make an unsafe location safe, and the cited safety authorities do not recommend a particular camera, lens, or focal length.

Do not step around a fence, lean over an edge, or approach the cliff base to include a foreground detail. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Sidestrand notice says “no selfie or photograph is worth risking your life for.” Treat a barrier or closure as a firm boundary, not a suggestion to work around for a better shot.
Distance advice depends on the specific place
There is no universal safe setback established by the authorities cited here. For the sites covered by its beach safety guidance, California State Parks advises staying at least 10 feet from bluffs. Point Reyes National Seashore tells visitors to stay several meters from cliff bases, as well as away from clifftop edges. These are different local instructions for different settings; neither distance should be applied as a general rule elsewhere. Follow the local signs and authority’s directions rather than trying to calculate a safe distance from a photograph. Cliff-failure scale also varies by site. The Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority describes collapses at Demons Bluff as regularly exceeding 100 metres in length, extending more than 40 metres from the cliff base, and involving more than 10,000 tonnes of material. Those figures describe that local setting; they are not a forecast or a general range for cliff collapses.

In the UK, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard if someone is in danger or has fallen into the water. Elsewhere, use the local emergency number and coastal rescue service. Do not enter a hazardous area or put yourself at risk in an attempt to help; follow the emergency operator’s instructions. Emergency guidance is included in the Maritime and Coastguard Agency notice and HM Coastguard’s coastal safety information.
