Wildfire smoke can change animal behavior, but the clearest direct field evidence is specific: a 2026 study found that elevated smoke was associated overall with lower vocal activity among breeding grassland birds in New York. It did not find one uniform response across species or prove that smoke alone caused population declines. Evidence about other animals and behaviors remains limited.

What the strongest field evidence shows

A 2026 study by Trifosa I. Simamora, Timothy J. Boycott, Conner M. Wood, and Steven Mark Grodsky examined breeding grassland birds in New York using passive acoustic monitoring during the breeding season. The study was conducted against the backdrop of smoke from 2023 eastern Canadian wildfires, which burned nearly 7.8 million hectares and sent smoke across the northeastern United States; that area figure describes the fires, not measured animal exposure. The study authors report: “We determined an overall negative effect of elevated smoke levels on breeding grassland bird vocal activity.” USGS study record.

Bobolink responses differed between smoke events

Even within Bobolinks, the response varied by event and timing. Vocal activity fell sharply during an intense smoke event early in the breeding season, then increased during a milder event later in the season. This contrast cautions against treating “smoke” as one consistent exposure or assuming every bird responds the same way.

What reduced calling might mean

Bird calls can support communication, including behaviors relevant to breeding. The study discusses possible fitness consequences of lower vocal activity, but it did not establish a measured reduction in reproduction, survival, or population size. A change in recorded calling is not itself proof of population decline.

What is known about bats near fires

A 2010 study considered a different situation: tree-roosting bats exposed near prescribed fires in mixed-oak forests of southeastern Ohio and eastern Kentucky, with the Indiana bat as its focal species. It combined plume modeling, field measurements, and mammalian dose-response relationships to examine carbon monoxide and heat-related risks—not broad behavioral responses to landscape-scale wildfire smoke. US Forest Service study record.

The model estimated that blood carboxyhemoglobin levels only approached critical levels just above flames in the most intense fires. Modeled ear-heating risk varied with fireline intensity, roost height, and ambient wind. These are modeled exposure hazards in a prescribed-fire context, not evidence that bats generally flee, hide, or change behavior during distant smoke events. The authors noted that more information was needed about bat arousal from torpor and behavior during fires.

Why smoke effects are hard to generalize

The bird and bat studies address different animals, settings, exposures, and endpoints: one observed vocal activity during ambient smoke events in a breeding season; the other modeled carbon monoxide and heat risks for bats roosting near prescribed fires. They are not head-to-head tests, and neither supports a universal behavioral rule.

  • Smoke exposure can vary in intensity and timing; the Bobolink observations differed between an intense early-season event and a milder later one.
  • Near an active fire, smoke exposure can coincide with heat. The bat model therefore considered both carbon monoxide and thermal risk.
  • Fire can affect animals through habitat changes as well as smoke. A Forest Service fauna review describes many animal effects mediated by habitat; those effects should not be attributed to smoke alone. Forest Service review of fire effects on fauna.

The 2022 Wildland Fire Smoke in the United States: A Scientific Assessment reviews physical, chemical, biological, social, and management dimensions of smoke science, but it does not supply a wildlife-wide behavioral rule. US Forest Service assessment. The USGS also identifies impacts of ash, smoke, and fire on wildlife and ecosystems as an ongoing research concern. USGS overview.

What researchers have not established

The available sources do not establish that wildlife universally evacuates, hides, stops feeding, or experiences population collapse because of smoke. They also do not provide a reliable cross-species ranking of susceptibility, a broad estimate of how often behavior changes, or a dependable long-term recovery timeline. Evidence is strongest for a specific association between elevated smoke and bird vocal activity; other conclusions need to remain specific to their study setting and measured endpoint.
