Before you buy, confirm that the exact PC configuration meets Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements—not just that its processor has the right speed or that the listing says “Windows 11.” Then compare the hardware against the apps and tasks you plan to run: Microsoft’s minimums establish eligibility, not a comfortable performance target.
Check every Windows 11 requirement in the listing
Microsoft’s published requirements are minimum eligibility thresholds. Check the exact model or configuration, especially if a product family is sold with different processors, memory, storage, or displays.
| What to verify | Microsoft’s minimum | What to check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | Compatible 64-bit processor or system on a chip (SoC), 1 GHz or faster, with at least 2 cores | Match the complete processor model to Microsoft’s compatible processor list. Clock speed and core count alone do not establish eligibility. |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | Confirm the installed amount and whether the specific device allows an upgrade. |
| Storage | 64 GB | Check the installed capacity and upgrade options. Microsoft notes that updates and some features may require additional storage. |
| Firmware and security | UEFI firmware that is Secure Boot capable; TPM version 2.0 | Look for both requirements in the manufacturer’s specifications. Do not assume a product is compliant if the listing leaves them out. |
| Graphics | DirectX 12-compatible graphics with a WDDM 2.0 driver | Check the graphics specifications for the exact configuration, particularly if you need graphics-intensive applications. |
| Display | More than 9 inches diagonally; HD 720p resolution; 8 bits per color channel | Confirm the panel specifications. A general Windows compatibility checker does not verify the graphics card or display. |
These thresholds come from Microsoft’s Windows 11 specifications and technical requirements. The processor is a particularly important check: Microsoft calls it a main determining factor and maintains a list of compatible processors.
Verify the exact PC, not just its product family
Buying a new PC
- Find the full model and configuration. A family name may cover several versions. Use the seller’s configuration details or the manufacturer’s specification page for the exact processor, memory, storage, graphics, and display.
- Check the processor model against Microsoft’s list. Do not infer support from a familiar brand, processor family, GHz rating, or core count.
- Confirm UEFI, Secure Boot capability, and TPM 2.0. If the product page omits these details, ask the retailer or manufacturer before purchasing.
- Inspect the graphics and display specifications separately. Microsoft’s PC Health Check app does not check either one.
- Confirm what software and setup are included. Check the Windows edition and whether a license is included, especially for a custom-built PC.
Checking a PC you already own
For an existing Windows 10 PC, Microsoft recommends its PC Health Check app to assess Windows 11 eligibility. Use it as one check, not the whole check: Microsoft says it does not assess the graphics card or display, so verify those specifications separately.

Microsoft says RAM and storage can sometimes be upgraded, depending on the device and manufacturer. Upgradeability is model-specific, and adding memory or storage cannot fix an unsupported processor or missing firmware and security requirements. Check the manufacturer’s service information for the exact machine before planning an upgrade.
Choose hardware for your workload, not the minimums
Meeting the requirements means a PC is eligible to run Windows 11; it does not mean every app will run well. Microsoft notes that particular apps, features, and additional hardware may require more than the minimum. Decide what matters for your use before comparing configurations.

- Model: Dell OptiPlex 7050 Small Form Factor (SFF)
- Processor: Intel Core i7-7700 3.60 GHz
- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
- Everyday browsing and office work: Compare processor capability, installed memory, and storage based on the apps and number of tasks you typically keep open.
- Gaming or graphics-heavy apps: Pay close attention to the graphics hardware and the requirements of the specific games or applications; Windows 11’s graphics minimum is not a gaming recommendation.
- Video work or software development: Consider the demands of your actual editing tools, projects, and development environment when comparing processor, memory, storage, and graphics options.
There is no universal ideal configuration established by Windows 11’s eligibility rules. Once more than one PC qualifies, compare the exact processor, installed and upgradeable memory, storage capacity and upgradeability, graphics, display, and—where relevant—ports, battery life, weight, and warranty.

Windows 11 Home and Windows 11 Pro for personal use require an internet connection and a Microsoft account during initial device setup. Internet is also needed for updates and some features. If you are buying a custom PC, Microsoft says you may need to purchase a Windows license; confirm whether the specific listing includes one rather than assuming the operating system is covered.
