The Panasonic DMR-4X1010 records Japanese terrestrial and satellite broadcasts to its 10 TB internal hard drive, with Blu-ray, USB HDD and Panasonic-announced cloud recording as ways to keep selected programs beyond the main library. For an archive you may want to play elsewhere, choose the destination with care: 4KDR recordings have stricter dubbing and playback limits, and Panasonic’s announced cloud feature does not yet have published pricing or retention terms.

Panasonic announced this Japan-market recorder on September 14, 2026, with release planned for late October 2026. The operating instructions are the authority for exact menu steps and supported external drives; avoid relying on generic button sequences or assuming a particular USB HDD will work.

Record broadcasts to the internal HDD

The 10 TB internal HDD is the recorder’s main destination for scheduled or other recordings. Panasonic lists support for Japanese terrestrial and satellite services, including BS/CS 4K. Its specifications list 11 tuners: two combinations for 4K-capable satellite and terrestrial services, four terrestrial/satellite tuners, and five terrestrial-only tuners. The available simultaneous recording assignments differ between all-auto and regular recording, so the tuner count alone does not establish how many programs can be recorded at once in every mode.

Storage estimates depend on broadcast type and recording quality. Panasonic lists approximately 762 hours of terrestrial HD in DR mode and approximately 390 hours in 4KDR regular recording. Its product overview advertises up to eight HD channels for about 28 days in 15x high-compression mode. These are manufacturer estimates, not independent test results; they are not interchangeable capacity guarantees, and actual recording time varies with the selected mode and content.

Destination What Panasonic documents Considerations
Blu-ray Recording support for BD-R from 25 GB through 128 GB, including four-layer media, and BD-RE from 25 GB through 100 GB. BD-R is record-once; BD-RE is rewritable. Other-device playback depends on recording mode and player compatibility, particularly for 4KDR.
USB HDD Panasonic lists USB HDD as a dubbing destination; 4KDR can be dubbed to a USB HDD in recording format. The precise compatible-drive requirements are not established here. 4KDR cannot be dubbed to a SeeQVault USB HDD.
Cloud Panasonic announced integration with Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive, playback through the recorder, remote viewing with the Diga app, and a service to transfer cloud recordings when replacing the recorder. Panasonic’s announcement does not state cloud plan cost, required account tier or retention terms. Treat those as details to verify before relying on cloud storage.

Use Blu-ray for a physical copy

BD-R: a record-once disc

BD-R is the straightforward choice when you want a physical copy that cannot be erased and reused as a rewritable disc can. Panasonic lists support from 25 GB through 128 GB, including four-layer BD-R. Check the disc’s exact format and the intended recording mode against the recorder instructions before buying media.

BD-RE: rewritable Blu-ray

Panasonic lists BD-RE support from 25 GB through 100 GB, including three-layer media. Because BD-RE can be reused, it is useful for recordings you may later replace, but it is not the same kind of write-once copy as BD-R.

DVD: limited recording options

The listed DVD recording media are DVD-R, DVD-R DL and DVD-RW, subject to restrictions. Broadcast programs require CPRM-compatible DVD media. Reservations cannot be recorded directly to DVD; they can only be dubbed. DVD-RW does not support HD recording or dubbing, and the DMR-4X1010 does not record to DVD-RAM.

Check the extra limits on 4KDR

Panasonic says 4KDR recordings can be dubbed to Blu-ray or to a USB HDD in recording format. They cannot be dubbed in 4KDR to DVD or to a SeeQVault-formatted USB HDD. A 4KDR Blu-ray may also require a compatible player, so making a disc does not guarantee it will play on another recorder or a third-party device.

Panasonic’s support FAQ says discs dubbed in 1.5x–15x modes can play on other models, but playback still depends on the receiving device’s specifications. Its list of compatible Panasonic devices is dated October 2024 and predates the DMR-4X1010 announcement; it therefore does not establish compatibility for this new model. Confirm support with the playback device’s documentation rather than assuming a 4KDR disc will work elsewhere.

Understand what cloud recording does—and what remains unknown

Panasonic announced cloud recording using Microsoft OneDrive or Google Drive. The announcement describes playing cloud recordings through the recorder interface, viewing them away from home with the Diga app, and transferring cloud recordings when replacing the recorder. Panasonic characterized the feature in its September 14, 2026 announcement as “録画番組の新しい保存のかたち「クラウド録画」” (“A new way to save recorded programs: ‘cloud recording’”).

Before you start dubbing

  • For Blu-ray, confirm whether you want record-once BD-R or reusable BD-RE, and verify the disc format and recording mode.
  • For DVD, use CPRM-compatible media for broadcast programs and account for the lack of HD support on DVD-RW.
  • For 4KDR, use Blu-ray or a recording-formatted USB HDD; do not plan on dubbing 4KDR to DVD or SeeQVault USB HDD.
  • Before choosing a USB HDD, check the DMR-4X1010 operating instructions for exact drive compatibility and setup requirements.
  • If playback on another device matters, confirm that device supports the disc and dubbing mode you intend to use.
