If you already own a compatible amplifier and passive speakers, QED speaker cable is the practical way to connect and keep using them. Choose a wireless streaming speaker if you want an integrated system with streaming or multiroom features and its supported services fit your devices. Wireless audio still requires power, and Wi-Fi models need a suitable network. There is no universal sound-quality winner established by the available evidence.

These are different kinds of audio system

QED speaker cable connects separate components

Speaker cable carries an amplified signal from an amplifier or AV receiver to passive speakers. QED sells several cable lines; its Performance Speaker Cable product page specifies a 2.5 mm² conductor cross-section. That figure alone does not determine the right cable for every setup: consider the actual run length, speaker impedance, installation and compatible terminations. See QED’s speaker-cable range.

A wireless streaming speaker integrates the main components

A wireless streaming speaker combines drivers and amplification with one or more ways to receive audio wirelessly. Its capabilities vary by model. For example, Sonos lists Wi-Fi and AirPlay 2 for the Five, along with Ethernet and line-in; its Era 100 fact sheet lists Wi-Fi and Bluetooth streaming and says auxiliary input uses a Line-In Adapter. Wireless describes audio delivery, not the need for electrical power or compatibility with every service. See the Sonos Five product page and Era 100 fact sheet.

Choose based on your equipment and priorities

What matters QED speaker cable with passive speakers Wireless streaming speaker
Existing equipment Uses a compatible amplifier or AV receiver and passive speakers you already own. Is a different system category; check its inputs and supported source methods before expecting it to replace a passive-speaker setup.
Placement Requires a physical cable route from the amplifier to each speaker. Reduces the audio-signal cable run, but still needs power; Wi-Fi models also need a suitable network. Some models, such as Sonos Five, list Ethernet as an option.
Streaming and multiroom Depends on the source equipment and other components in the system. Features depend on the particular model, services, phone or operating system. Check support and grouping options rather than assuming all wireless speakers offer the same ones.
Total cost and flexibility Account for the cable, amplifier and passive speakers needed for the complete setup. Account for the speaker and any required adapters or cables. Current prices were not established as a like-for-like comparison.

How long can speaker cable run?

QED advises keeping a cable’s loop resistance below 5% of the speaker’s nominal impedance. Its undated support guidance, accessed in 2026, gives Silver Anniversary XT with an 8-ohm speaker as an example: 18 m (59 feet) is the point at which a frequency-response change is said to become indisputable; QED describes about half that length, or 30 feet, as a sensible hi-fi limit. These are QED recommendations for its example, not universal limits for every cable, speaker or installation. Read QED’s cable-length guidance.

QED XT40i Pre-Terminated Speaker Cable – 2m Pair
  • Air Gap dielectric for lower capacitance and better timing
  • X-Tube technology for low inductance and better current delivery
  • Pure 99.999% oxygen-free copper conductors
  • Ideal for long cable runs with large cross-sectional area
  • Pre-terminated with Airloc Heat Shrink 4mm Banana Plugs

Loop length counts the conductor path out and back. QED notes that its measured cable resistance can include strand and connection effects, so do not compare a single-conductor resistance value directly with a loop-resistance recommendation. Its explanation is at How QED calculates loop resistance.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say about sound

The cited product and support pages establish selected specifications and manufacturer guidance; they are not independent, controlled comparisons of a QED-cabled passive system against a wireless streaming speaker. QED’s Genesis Report describes QED’s own cable measurements and listening tests, but it does not compare those complete system types. The evidence therefore does not support saying that cable or wireless inherently sounds better, or that a more expensive cable necessarily improves sound. Sound quality depends on the specific speakers, room and system; a general verdict would require a relevant head-to-head test.

Check before buying

  • For a cable: Confirm the amplifier and speaker terminals, required length and compatible termination. Use the cable model’s specifications and the actual run and speaker load when assessing resistance.
  • For a wireless speaker: Confirm the music services, phone or operating-system support, network needs and multiroom options for the exact model. Verify power access at the intended location.
  • For a wired source into a wireless model: Check whether it has the input you need and whether an adapter is required. Sonos says Era 100 auxiliary input uses its Line-In Adapter.
  • For either choice: Compare the complete equipment and any adapters or cables required, not just the cable or speaker in isolation.
