If The Witcher 3 runs slowly or stutters on PC, start with CD PROJEKT RED’s recommended checks: clean-install your graphics driver, verify the game files, disable overlays, and close unnecessary apps before launching. Then compare performance in the same scene while changing resolution or graphics settings one at a time. The right fix depends on your game version, hardware, and whether the problem is consistently low frame rate or brief hitches.
Record a baseline before changing settings
Write down the game version, the DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 launch option you use (if both are available), output resolution, graphics preset, ray-tracing state, and your CPU and GPU. Note whether the problem is low average FPS, short stutters, or both. These details help distinguish a reproducible performance change from normal variation between scenes.
Test in the same location and a similar gameplay situation after each change. CD PROJEKT RED says its expected FPS targets are based on QA tests, and that performance can vary with the system configuration, graphics settings, output resolution, scene, and gameplay. Follow the developer’s troubleshooting steps
- Clean-install the graphics driver. Use the appropriate GPU maker’s driver process. CD PROJEKT RED’s official performance troubleshooting guide recommends removing previous drivers before a clean installation. For AMD, it points to AMD Cleanup Utility before installing the latest driver. If the issue started immediately after a driver update, the guide advises installing the previous version and reporting the problem.
- Verify the game files. Use the file-verification option in the platform where you installed the game. The exact menu labels vary by platform.
- Disable overlay features temporarily. Turn off overlays such as Discord, Ubisoft Connect, or GOG Galaxy, or temporarily disable the related application, then test again.
- Close unnecessary applications before launch. The developer specifically includes hardware-monitoring and antivirus or anti-malware programs in its troubleshooting advice. Treat this as a temporary diagnostic test, not a recommendation to leave security protection disabled.
Change one item at a time and repeat the same test scene. That makes it easier to tell whether a step helped.

Adjust graphics load one setting at a time
Lower the output resolution or a demanding graphics setting, then repeat your comparison. Resolution can significantly affect FPS, according to CD PROJEKT RED. If your version exposes ray tracing or upscaling options, test those separately as well; available choices and their results depend on the build and hardware. Each reduction can improve performance at the cost of image quality, so change only what you need.
A specific preset cannot be recommended without knowing your GPU, target resolution, and preferred image quality. The developer’s published performance figures are tied to its stated test context; for example, its current requirements page says a GTX 1660 can achieve 60 FPS or higher at Minimum settings. That statement is not a prediction for other settings or systems. Consult the requirements and performance notes alongside your own repeatable test.

Check the installation drive and game version
Storage: HDD versus SSD
CD PROJEKT RED says an SSD is required to support the game’s latest technical enhancements and describes faster loading and smoother asset streaming as benefits. If your installation is on an HDD, moving it to a suitable SSD is a reasonable step to consider, particularly if loading or asset streaming is the concern. The requirement does not establish that an SSD will fix every low-FPS or stuttering problem, or guarantee higher average FPS.
Version rollback depends on platform
The official requirements page identifies version 1.32 (Classic) as an earlier version players may be able to return to, and says version 4.04 will also be available after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered releases. Availability depends on platform and timing; check your platform’s current instructions and the developer’s support notice before changing versions. A rollback is not a universal or permanent fix.

Send useful evidence to support if the problem remains
If the recommended checks do not resolve the issue, contact CD PROJEKT RED support with a video of the problem when possible. If it happens only in a particular location, include a save file. The developer lists the Windows save folder as %userprofile%DocumentsThe Witcher 3gamesaves. Include your baseline details—version, launch option, resolution, settings, hardware, and the scene where the issue reproduces—so support can assess the conditions.
