Before installing a major Windows 11 release, check which update is actually offered to your PC, review its known issues and support status, and make sure a restart can happen when you are not working. For most people, the right choice is to install when Windows offers the release and the device is ready—not to turn on early updates or defer every release by default. The steps below apply to consumer-facing Windows 11 Settings; a work- or school-managed PC may follow administrator policies. Settings labels can vary by build.
Should you install the Windows 11 update now?
Decide based on the specific release and your PC, rather than a blanket rule to install immediately or wait. Open Settings > Windows Update to see the current status and updates offered to this device. Microsoft rolls out some updates gradually, so a release may not yet be available to every PC. Check the Windows release health dashboard and the notes for the target version for current availability and known issues.
Use these checks to choose:
- The update is offered and no relevant issue is listed: If you can accommodate the installation and restart, installing is reasonable.
- The release is not offered: Do not assume your PC is eligible for immediate installation; availability can depend on Microsoft’s gradual rollout.
- Your installed version is nearing end of support: Give support status weight when deciding whether to delay. Microsoft’s September 22, 2026 release notes say Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro reach end of updates on October 13, 2026. For 24H2 Enterprise and Education editions, the stated end-of-updates date is October 12, 2027. These dates apply to those editions and this release only; check the release notes for current details.
- You need to avoid a work-time restart: Set Active hours before installing, or use a pause only if you need a short, bounded delay.
- Storage or power is uncertain: Address the warning Windows shows and connect a laptop or tablet to power before installation.
Windows distinguishes feature updates, which introduce functionality, from more frequent quality updates, which mainly contain fixes and security updates. Automatic feature updates are offered to consumer and non-managed business devices, but managed PCs may differ; devices do not necessarily receive the same offer on the same day. Microsoft explains update types and rollout behavior in its Windows Update FAQ.
Review the early-updates setting
“Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available”
Find this toggle in Settings > Windows Update. Turning it on prioritizes eligible non-security updates, fixes, features, and improvements for your device. It does not guarantee that a particular major release will become available immediately. Microsoft says regular security updates continue whether the toggle is on or off.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
If you prefer to receive eligible updates earlier, turn it on. If you would rather not prioritize those updates, leave it off; use Windows Update to review what is offered. See Microsoft’s guidance on getting updates as soon as they’re available.
Set Active hours to avoid inconvenient restarts
Active hours tell Windows when you usually use the PC and help prevent automatic restarts during those hours. Go to Settings > Windows Update > Advanced options > Active hours. Choose the option to let Windows adjust hours based on activity, or set the hours manually to match your routine. This helps with restart timing; it is not a reason to leave important updates uninstalled indefinitely. Microsoft’s Active hours guidance describes the setting.

Use Pause updates only for a temporary delay
If you need time before an update—for example, to finish work or wait for a convenient installation window—go to Settings > Windows Update and use the pause control to choose an end date. Microsoft’s current guidance describes pausing for up to 35 days. The interface allows an extension only when the new end date remains within 35 days of the current date. When the pause ends, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates. Pausing delays updates temporarily; it does not disable them permanently. See Microsoft’s Pause updates guidance.

There is no single free-space minimum established for every Windows 11 major release in Microsoft’s general update guidance. Follow any space warning or requirement shown for your PC or the target release rather than relying on a universal number. If storage is short, Microsoft suggests removing files or apps you do not need, or moving files to another drive, such as an external USB drive. Keep a laptop or tablet plugged in while updates install. More preparation advice is in the Windows Update FAQ.
